Margot Robbie promises you’ll see many facets of Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad

Suicide Squad will feature the big screen debut of DC’s most popular female character, Harley Quinn! Margot Robbie will be playing Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad, and she talked about what she thinks Quinn’s relationship to the Joker is like and how you will see many different sides of Harley in Suicide Squad:

"I did a lot of research on mental illness and codependency. I was trying to access a way in to understanding why she’s so in love with the Joker. I kind of decided that she’s codependent on him. Now that I’ve done the research, I realize that that’s more of an addiction than an illness… You see many sides of her. Sometimes she’s really funny. Sometimes she’s really mean. She just enjoys everything she does. Whether she’s doing something good or bad, she’ll have an equal amount of enjoyment out of it. She’s not always the most likable character."

Addiction and illness may seem similar to some in the case of Harley Quinn and Joker, but saying the relationship (at least on Harley’s end) is an addiction in Suicide Squad implies that Quinn can be weaned off this destructive and abusive relationship. I’ve stated many times that as essential as her relationship with the Joker is to Harley Quinn, I think it’s also super-important that we see her grow and become independent of him (hopefully en route to her own feature film, possibly in 2019 filling that untitled DC movie slot). Maybe the road to that will start in Suicide Squad(possibly with a relationship with Deadshot, who she has had a relationship with in the comics). We’ll find out when it opens in theaters August 5th.
