I feel like there is love for it now, in hindsight, but Batman Beyond was not well-received for the most part when it fist came around in 1999. Granted, it had humongous shoes to fill, following in the steps o the seminal Batman: The Animated series before it, and even somewhat continuing in continuity from that show, as it had a senior citizen Bruce Wayne training a new Batman for the future, Terry McGinnins. I personally loved the show from the start, and it produced easily one of the best Batman movies, animated or otherwise in Batman Beyond: Return of The Joker.

But I could see why others didn’t readily accept it. This wasn’t Gotham, it was “Neo Gotham”, this Terry McGinnis wasn’t their Batman, and indeed, while this Batman took some cues from is mentor, he walked his own path with a bunch of new villains that admittedly with few exceptions, weren’t really up to the standards of Batman’s rogues gallery.

But as I said, I feel in hindsight, Batman Beyond is getting the recognition it deserves. A comic of the series is still going strong, people seem to love the idea of a Batman Beyond live action TV show or a movie in the near future, and there’s a noteworthy amount of Batman Beyond merchandise.
