Brian Michael Bendis Says Just About Everyone Can Beat Batman
Brian Michael Bendis thinks the Dark Knight is far from untouchable
Brian Michael Bendis is easily one of the most acclaimed and well-respected comic book writers working today. You like all these awesome Marvel movies we’ve seen over the last decade? Well he’s the primary architect of the “Ultimates” universe they are based on. His Powers books (which there is a series based on available on the PlayStation Networ with season 2 starting up soon) is a big personal favorite of mine. Most people think Brian Michael Bendis is one of the best comic writers in the business.
But Bendis may raise the ire of some DC and especially Batman fans with a response on his personal blog. A fan asked Brian Michael Bendis if Captain America could beat Batman (they have canonically fought in a big crossover event previously), but it was to a draw). Bendis responding by listing everyone he thinks can beat Batman. I won’t paste the list here just because it is incredibly long, you can go and check it out yourself. But it is incredibly long ad undistinguished, listing a large majority of comic book characters including Batman’s many sidekicks, Chuck Norris and Tina Fey. So yeah, according to Brian Michael Bendis, just about anybody could beat Batman, your grandmother could possibly beat Batman according to him.

Of course the thing Batman defenders will always say is that Batman can beat anybody (given time to plan or whatever), but whether he’s doing it intentionally or not, Brian Michael Bendis is actually hitting on the appeal of Batman. On a given day ANYONE could potentially beat Batman. Batman has said it himself on occasion that he could be beaten by one of his worst enemies, or just a punk who gets lucky. Hell one of the best episode of Batman: The Animated series is about some random shmuck who apparently killed Batman by sheer luck. So in a sense, Brian Michael Bendis is right, just about anyone could beat Batman, and that’s what keeps him one of the most intriguing, relateable and popular comic book characters for over 75 years.
