“Leviathan” — the thirteenth episode of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow has the Legends embarking on a mission in 2166 at the height of Vandal Savage’s power. Why? That’s the only location in time where they’re guaranteed to find the tyrant so they can kill him.

Legendary Recap: The Waverider arrives in 2166 London and it’s immediately under attack. The team quickly finds cover. Since Savage will be out in the open tonight, the team will attempt to stop Savage — which is three days before he’s scheduled to kill Rip’s family.

Rip, Leonard, Mick, and Sara attend Savage’s speech rally. As it ends, a female soldier, Cassandra, notices Leonard which tips him off that she’s made the team. On the Waverider, Kendra looks at footage of Cassandra and notices her bracelet — it was owned by Kendra in a past life.

Following Savage, Mick purposely trips Rip so that they can engage Savage and his soldiers. Kendra tells Sara to get the bracelet from Cassandra, but the team is forced to retreat when more soldiers start to arrive. Leonard hesitates killing Cassandra when given the chance.

Kendra tells the team that the bracelet is something she wore on the night of her death. None of them know how a bracelet can be used to kill Savage. Gideon suddenly alerts them about movement from the resistance.

In a remote area, Rip, Martin, Jax, and Ray are ambushed by the resistance. After a short interrogation by the resistance leader, they learn that White Chapel, the home of Rip’s family, fell about eleven days ago. The team is brought to the resistance camp where they notice a large population of helpless refugees.

Ray wants to know why Rip hasn’t contact his family. Rip reveals that every time he’s come back to meet them, they were murdered. It was as if time wants it to happen. Their meeting is interrupted when a distress call is heard from another resistance faction.

The team arrives to a scene of death and destruction. London is now the last city left standing.

The team forms a plan to steal the bracelet. However, everyone wants to know how something as benign as a bracelet can be weaponized. Rip has Kendra look into Boardman’s research.

As Kendra goes through Carter’s things, she touches his mace and gets a flashback: In 1941 Iowa City, Carter tells Kendra that she needs to be trained in how to use his mace. He tells her that she’ll never be without him.

Back to the present, Kendra figures out how she can kill Savage.

Cassandra is paid a surprise visit by Leonard and Mick. When the alarms go off, they abduct her and hold her in a cell on the Waverider. She soon reveals that she’s the daughter of Savage.

Everyone has their own idea on what to do with Cassandra. Mick’s is the most extreme: send her back to Savage in pieces. Sara thinks Cassandra will know the details of Savage’s defenses. Leonard has an idea on how to extract information from her.

Leonard visits Cassandra at her cell and talks to her. She challenges him to torture her, but he has another method. He uses his own father as an example of a bad parent. Cassandra defends Savage and tells him that Per Degaton released a virus that killed thousands, including her mother. Savage was the only one that stood up to Per.

Mick melts the bracelet down and Kendra uses the molten material to coat Carter’s mace.

Ray discovers that Savage’s secret weapon is not an explosive. Viewing satellite images, they see giant footprints. The Waverider suddenly starts to shake. Back at Savage’s headquarters, Savage is notified that the Leviathan has located the Legends.

Ray and Martin go to the resistance camp and evacuate everyone onto the Waverider. Just as they board, the Leviathan, a giant robot, picks up the Waverider and shakes it violently, eventually tossing it.

The Waverider lands in the middle of a forest. As the team composes themselves, Martin discovers that he’s been hit by a piece of shrapnel. Gideon quickly administers a sedative to aid him in rest and recovery.

Leonard releases Cassandra and shows her the helpless refugees. She thinks he’s trying to manipulate her with lies. Leonard reveals to her that Per Degaton didn’t release the virus, Savage did. She only believes him when he shows her old video footage of Savage meeting with the Kasnian Council.

Rip is losing hope, but Ray pays him a visit and tells him that he doesn’t believe in fate. They have the ability to choose to fight, even if it’s futile. Leonard and Kendra enter, telling them that they may have found a way to defeat Savage.

Outside, Jax helps Ray prepare his ATOM suit. The adjustments are a risky move. After Jax finishes, Ray tells him to stand clear. Upon powering up, Ray starts to enlarge into an enormous size. He sees the Leviathan and engages it.

Cassandra arrives back at Savage’s headquarters. He happily greets her until he discovers that her bracelet is missing. She tries to lie her way out, but Savage sees right through it. Holding his own daughter hostage, Savage makes her call out to the Legends. As Rip and the team move in, Savage’s soldiers arrive in droves.

Ray hits the Leviathan multiple times with his weapons.

Kendra quickly swoops down and flies Savage into another room where she throws him to the ground. She engages him with her mace. Kendra starts to overpower Savage, with her mace doing some devastating damage. In the main room, the Legends and Cassandra fight alongside each other against Savage’s soldiers.

Ray is hit by the Leviathan and knocked out.

Kendra is suddenly attacked by one of Savage’s soldiers. She fights him and knocks him out, causing his helmet to fall off. In a surprising twist, the soldier is revealed to be Carter. Savage tells her that he brainwashed Carter when he first discovered Carter’s existence. An angered Kendra is ready to kill Savage, but he tells her that if he dies, she will never be able to deprogram Carter.

The Leviathan is about to kill Ray. Jax, who’s been monitoring the situation, gives Ray a pep talk, motivating him to get up and fight. Ray comes back to consciousness and sprints towards the Leviathan. Using all his might, Ray knocks off the head of the Leviathan, destroying it.

Rips runs in and tells Kendra to kill Savage. She tells Rip that if she kills Savage, Carter’s mind will be lost forever. Rip tells her that if she doesn’t kill him, his family will be lost. Kendra eventually chooses to spare Savage’s life.

Leonard brings Cassandra to the resistance leader. She’s reluctant to accept her at first, but Leonard tells the resistance leader that Cassandra is an asset.

On the Waverider, Rip has imprisoned Savage in his own cell. Taunting Rip, Savage asks if he still thinks there’s hope for his family.

Legendary Moment(s): Ray reversing the function on his ATOM suit and enlarging to fight the Leviathan. And Kendra besting Vandal Savage at hand-to-hand combat.

Thoughts for Tomorrow: I found it strange that Kendra believed that Savage is the only one who can deprogram Carter. It was a rather gullible move. She could’ve easily killed Savage and had the rest of the Legends and Gideon figure out a way to bring Carter’s mind back. They’ve done other more improbable things before. This should be a walk in the park.
