Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD Recap And Review – “Failed Experiments”

I don’t know about you, but I’m pretty excited for Agents of SHIELD to bring on the Kree! So how did they do?!

Not-So-Short Summary: Agents of SHIELD gives us a flashback of when the Kree arrived on Earth and how exactly Hive came to be. Kree reapers kidnapped Hive’s human form and performed experiments before creating the first Inhuman. It’s a quick little tale, only similar to his comic book origins in the fact that he was created in an experiment.

The remaining heads of Hydra are going to be the guinea pigs in their attempt to recreate the experiment. This should go well! Dr. Radcliffe attempts the first experiment on them, only to create mushy piles of melted flesh and organs. It’s really gross.

Hive is ticked that it didn’t work. Seriously, calm down, Hive, it’s round one! It’s an experiment for a reason! Radcliffe needs samples from a living Kree to make it work. Hive pulls out his secret weapon: the Kree devices from off-brand Gambit.

At SHIELD HQ, Lincoln is throwing a hissy fit over not being able to help the love of his life (okay I’m being harsh). May throws some shade at him and shuts him down, but he finds an alternative way to help: he volunteers to try the Hive antidote. Coulson shuts it down because the risks outweigh the potential/theoretical rewards.

Oh, and then Lincoln decides to take the antidote when no one is around. His powers go crazy, he passes out, and his body starts to shut down. When he wakes up, he comes to find out that the tissue sample Simmons needs is a chunk of his brain. It’s all for naught–the antitoxin didn’t work, and Lincoln now has to rebuild his immune system.

Coulson finds Daisy from surveillance footage in South Wyoming. Coulson thinks her getting caught on camera is a trap; Mack thinks part of her is trying to get saved. Never mind, because it’s going to become a targeted strike on Hive. Mack is okay with this because he needs to make things right with Daisy, since she is his partner.

Mack and May infiltrate the city, and May sets her sights on James to get information on what’s going on. He does so very willingly because he’s more interested in flirting and chatting than keeping secrets. She also finds out where Hive is holed up: the mining company building.

Mack storms it with SHIELD, only to find the Kree device…which ushers in the arrival of two Kree. They’re reapers and are coming here to hunt and clean up. It turns out Hive wants Daisy to get the blood from the Kree.

Well. Alicia’s dead at the hands of the Kree. So there’s that. And Daisy takes down the one Kree while the other takes on Hive. Hive, however, has a 1000-year grudge he needs to get out in punches. He burns off the Kree’s face with his hive powers, and also rips out his heart just because he can.

Mack finds Daisy and tries to get her to come with him. “We’re going to make you into an Inhuman,” she tells Mack, and his face is priceless. It’s nice to see Mack bare his soul to someone other than Bobbi and Hunter. I also want to punch Daisy in the face for all the low shots she takes at Mack to get him to leave.

But then he’s a badass and throws a spider bomb at the Kree they’re draining for blood. Daisy kicks the crap out of Mack because he refuses to fight back, and just as she starts to crush his ribcage to kill him, May shoots her in the arm.

Daisy makes the realization that she has Kree blood pumping through her and tells Hive to user her blood. Their experiment isn’t over.

Post-Credits Stinger: It’s a quick little sneak peek for Captain America: Civil War, a kickass scene of Black Widow being a general badass along with Falcon doing some sweet things with those nicely repaired wings.

Badass Moment of the Week: Daisy decimating the Kree’s spine with her powers. Hot damn. I mean, Quake is that powerful, so it’s nice to see it. But damn.

Best One-Liner: “And what if Hive can’t be killed?” Mack asks.
“I suggest running. Very fast. Away,” Coulson replies.

Runner-up: “Maybe he’s hoping to form some sort of creepy dude alliance.”

So Daisy wants to turn her SHIELD friends into Inhumans once Radcliffe figures out the formula. Now that’s got me thinking about who would get what powers. Is it based on what Lincoln/Jiaying believes, that it’s on a need in the universe? Or is it more on personality? More to come in this week’s Agents of SHIELD Friday article!

AHAH! HIVE SAID CIVIL WAR! I’m going to Moe’s!

And how about that preview for Captain America: Civil War?! It’ll be interesting to see how much of a “fallout” their is in the next episode, though I have a feeling it’ll be more general mention like after Age of Ultron. Regardless, if you’re into spoilers, or you’re genuinely curious about the mid- and post-credits scenes, we’ll have that up for you late Thursday evening after I hit my standard 7pm showing.

Five bucks says Daisy is the big bad for next season. No idea how if they kill Hive at the end, but it would be a fun twist! We’ll see what happens in these last few episodes.
