#16 – Cap is Almost Worthy

From: Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015)

It started out with Clint Barton questioning Thor’s “trick” in lifting Mjolnir, the legendary hammer. Thor emphasized that there was no trickery involved whatsoever. The God of Thunder went as far as giving each Avenger a try at lifting his weapon of choice. Challenge accepted! It started with Clint … then Tony Stark … then Tony and Rhodey. The team did get a momentary scare when Bruce Banner made his attempt by mock-summoning his Hulk side as a joke.

However, if there ever was an Avenger or a person, for that matter, who had the “worthiness” to lift Mjolnir, it would be Steve Rogers. As Steve grasped the hammer’s handle, he gave it a good pull. Thor, who was jovially smiling and laughing at everyone else’s failed attempts, was washed over with a wave of concern when Mjolnir actually budged.

On a second attempt by Steve, the hammer stayed securely in place. Thor reacted with a relieved laugh and said, “Nothing!” What most don’t know is that Captain America actually wielded Mjolnir in the comics. So the debate here is that Steve may have been pretending in order to protect Thor … because that’s what someone who’s worthy would do.
