#15 – The First Rescue Mission

From: Captain America: The First Avenger (2011)

After Steve Rogers received the Super-Soldier Serum and Vita-Ray treatment, the US Army didn’t put him right to work. Why? Colonel Phillips had thought he was getting any army of super-soldiers. But with Erskine dead and the Super-Soldier formula lost, all plans for an elite fighting force were scrapped. Phillips didn’t think Steve had what it took to fight a war, let alone one against Hydra.

Senator Brandt, though, saw Steve in action and had other ideas of how Steve could serve the United States — tour the nation as a character called “Captain America” promoting war bonds. Always keeping his chin up and always willing to help, Steve agreed to this silly idea. That is, until he got word that his best friend, James “Bucky” Barnes, and his unit were missing in action. Defying orders and getting the assistance of both Howard Stark and Peggy Carter, Steve mounted a rescue mission.

Infiltrating a Hydra fortress, Steve frees numerous Allied soldiers and rescues Bucky. It was also at this time that he had his first encounter with the Red Skull. Arriving back to base with the enemies’ weapons and freed soldiers, Steve gains the respect of Phillips, who finally allows Steve to become an active part of the war — but this time, he would be armed with a new suit and technology from Stark.
