#20 – Steve Just About Loses It

From: Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015)

Hiding out at Clint Barton’s family home, Steve Rogers and Tony Stark help out with the chores by chopping wood. There’s already a huge contrast between the two: for every two or three swings that Tony takes with his axe, Steve needs only one hit to splinter the wood. Though the work seems mundane, the argument between the two isn’t.

Steve is disheartened that his own team is keeping things from him, and Tony is suspicious as to what Steve saw in his Scarlet Witch-induced vision. In Tony’s own words, “I don’t trust a guy without a dark side.” Steve replies that Tony hasn’t seen it yet. The argument soon escalates to Tony’s unsanctioned research which led to the creation of Ultron. Tony believes that his invention was a means to an end. A war that would end all wars. Because at the end of the day, he wants a world where the Avengers aren’t necessary anymore.

Angered by Tony’s self-entitled, self-righteous attitude, Steve tears a log in half with his bare hands. The First Avenger has seen the deaths of innocent people from men trying to win wars that haven’t started yet.
