Fueled by insomnia and panic attacks from his experience in the Battle of New York, Tony Stark immerses himself with work. The result is an army of Iron Man armors, with one of them having the ability to be controlled by Tony’s mind — the Mark XLII Armor.
When the Mandarin targets Tony’s Malibu estate with an attack, a rocket explosion blows both Tony and Pepper violently back. As Pepper travels towards a deadly surface of jagged concrete and steel, Tony summons his armor. Piece-by-piece the Mark XLII wraps itself around Pepper until she becomes an “Iron Woman,” protecting her from a deadly impact with the debris.
