Suicide Squad ‘Next Step’ In Superhero Movies
Jay Hernandez talks evolution of superhero movies and how Suicide Squad is a part of that.
Suicide Squad is the next big movie out of the DCEU, and it’s taking a decidedly different bent than most superhero films by focusing on the bad guys. But that’s not all that makes it different according to Suicide Squad star Jay Hernandez, who plays the fiery El Diablo in the film. In fact, he calls Suicide Squad “the next step in superhero films”:
"Suicide Squad is the next step. Everything starts somewhere and is going to end somewhere. I think this is that next step in the evolution of superhero movies… [There are] characters from the other movies that have come in onto our project. It’s interesting because, as a filmmaker and as a writer, you have to make it make sense. You have to find some way to infuse characters that aren’t really part of the narrative, but still have it make sense and have it not just be this weird piece where you’re setting up the other movie. It’s fluid and it has to feel right."
Hernandez also talked about the fact that he plays someone who is admittedly not a well-known character in the DC universe in Suicide Squad, and actually how freeing that can be:
"As a lesser known member of the squad, there wasn’t as much anticipation and there wasn’t people saying, ‘You’re veering off doctrine. There’s a certain level of freedom that I thought was great"
Next: Suicide Squad: Killer Croc
When Hernandez is talking about characters from other movies being in Suicide Squad, he is most likely referring to Batman, but what if it’s not just Batman? Could any of the other members of the Justice League be involved? Or any other villains? We’ll find out when Suicide Squad opens in theaters August 5th.
