The Women Of Suicide Squad

Suicide Squad features a wide range of powerful women from the pages of DC Comics

Let’s face facts, comic book movies often don’t do a great job of showcasing women. Even if a movie features a kickass woman or two, she’s often vastly oustshone and outnumbered by her male counterparts. Suicide Squad may be one of the first movies to change this trend as it not only features a very diverse cast, but several noteworthy, popular and extremely powerful women from the DC Universe. The women of Suicide Squad talked with Entertainment Weekly about the movie, which appeared in the most recent print edition of the magazine (yes, they still make those):

Suicide Squad star Margot Robbie had this to say about her character Harley Quinn:

"David [Ayer] really wanted her to be strong, badass and nuts — but fun as well. Whenever I would be inclined to play into the comedy or play her more likable, he’d always direct me the other way. He wanted her to be pretty vicious"

Viola Davis, who plays Amanda Waller in the Suicide Squad film, embraced her inner badass:

"‘How can I be a badass?’ I had to do it internally. Of course I wore my ‘fro. And I embraced her bio. That was all I had. I didn’t have a cape or a golden lasso."

Karen Fukuhara instantly felt like she had an instant connection to her character Katana:

"She has this samurai spirit, and that’s something I’ve been watching and learning about my whole life. I felt like I knew Katana as soon as I read the comic."

Cara Delevigne got in touch with nature for her role in Suicide Squad as Enchantress:

"David [Ayer] asked me to go into a forest under a full moon and take my clothes off to feel what nature felt like, to feel what it felt like to be an animal. And I did it. It didn’t sound that weird to me."

And Enchantress is most likely the primary villain in Suicide Squad, so while not necessarily the first, it’s a rare thing that Marvel hasn’t really done.  I am definitely hoping one of the reasons Suicide Squad is awesome is that it features multiple kickass women kicking all kinds of ass. Suicide Squad opens in theaters August 5th.
