The finale of The Flash’s second season may have changed everything

So, Flash season two. They went there. Flashpoint. Arguably the worst mistake Barry Allen ever made in the comics. In the season finale, Flash went back in time and saved his mother from being murdered by the reverse Flash. And the season just ends there. But anyone who is familiar with Flashpoint knows that season three of The Flash will not just start with everything being great because Barry’s mom is suddenly alive. Messing with the timeline opens some doors, but makes other things so much worse. Superman is detained by the government. Bruce Wayne was killed by Joe Chill, turning his father into Batman and his mother into The Joker. Wonder Woman and the Amazons are warring with the Atlanteans. And Barry has no superpowers, he never became The Flash.

Now, of course the problem with this scenario for The Flash show is none of those characters are part of the CW DC universe. In all likelihood, some parts of this will be taken and applied to characters already in existence. But as Flashpoint, both in comics and on the show, is a reality altering event, what if they didn’t go that route? What if they finally brought in Batman this way?

Look at it like this. Flashpoint as it takes place in the CW universe is likely going to be a way to essentially fold Supergirl, who takes place on “Earth 3” into the “Earth One” all the CW comic book shows currently take place in. And although he hasn’t really been on the show, Supergirl has established Superman. He exists. He exists like the president in Veep exists, where he’s never really seen, but he’s still there. And in a world where all these other characters exist, it makes less and less sense that Batman doesn’t. It’s time to open that door, and the season two finale of The Flash is a great way to do it.

You could do it exactly like the story. Thomas and Martha Wayne are Batman and The Joker, respectively. It can even be that way for many episodes. What that does is open the door for Batman in a very sneaky way.

Andrew Kreisberg, one of the architects of the whole CW DC universe, has said that one of the ways he was able to get DC & Warner Bros. to let him use things and characters they weren’t initially keen on was basically sneaking things into shows and saying, “hey this is already here, so there’s precedent and I can use it”. And it’s worked multiple times. This could totally work the same way. I mean, just by doing Flashpoint, you open the door to these possibilities, so hopefully at least the idea is there.

Granted, in all likelihood, Batman showing up on The Flash in any form is likely a pipe dream. Key things that happened in Flashpoint will likely just be applied to characters already existing in the CW DC universe that’s been established. But how awesome would it be if Thomas Wayne shows up next season, opening up the door for Bruce Wayne down the line? Something to ponder at least.
