“Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD” Season 4: How Dark Will Daisy Go?

The Season Three Finale of Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD gave us a glimpse of what Daisy’s been up to. Could she be taking a turn for the worse in Season Four?

Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD ended season three with a flash-forward to six months from now. And that left a heck of a lot of questions.

Namely, what the heck is Daisy up to?

Obviously that’s a loaded question since we only saw her for about fifteen seconds. That flash forward held a lot of clues and information to what season four might hold. Let’s focus on the Daisy part of it, and let’s make it organized. How about a list?

  1. She’s now known as Quake. Nationally known, mind you. That’s a big deal. Her name is showing up in newspaper headlines. No longer do we get hints of her comic book counterpart in Mack’s cute nickname of Tremors (which I’m still bummed does not involve Kevin Bacon).
  2. She’s wanted by pretty much everyone. I mean, if she’s showing up in newspaper headlines, she’s obviously a wanted criminal. We’re talking low-key, not Avengers-level notice (though if they wanted to give me my Hawkeye cameo, that would be awesome)
  3. Her hair is long. Sure, six months have passed, but it feels like long hair might be the female equivalent of beards a la Grant Ward turning Hydra.
  4. Coulson’s looking for her like crazy. Not only is she a threat to the nation, but she’s a threat to the new iteration of SHIELD and to Coulson’s entire team… and his sanity. That’s his surrogate daughter causing all this destruction! He must do something!

In the season three finale, Daisy was ready and willing to sacrifice her life for her SHIELD compatriots and the rest of the world. But that’s not how her vision of the future worked out; turns out it was Lincoln who sacrificed his life to save everyone else. The same person who taught her to embrace her powers, the same person who came to SHIELD because of her, the same person she loved and also betrayed because of Hive. The same person who actually understood what she was going through in turning Inhuman.

Everything took a 180 turn for the worse for Daisy in the finale, and her emotional stability to the brunt of the damage. It’s obviously taken a toll on the Daisy/Skye we know and turned her darker, but how dark is she going to go?

In an interview with EW, Chloe Bennet had some thoughts on Daisy’s transformation:

"“I think it makes her more ruthless being so close to what she thought was her own death. And then it happening in one of the worst scenarios she could ever think of, which is the person that she loved doing it for her, I think it changes her in a way where she probably will face life with even more ruthlessness. Also, there’s a sense of sadness that was there that I tried to make apparent at the end of the episode.”"

It’s a dangerous line Daisy flirts with in the few glimpses we’ve seen. There is an easy path toward the dark side that she can take, and she was kind of already there at the start of Agents of SHIELD, hiding out in her van and doing vaguely mean, threatening things.

It can’t be as dark as Grant Ward went, that’s for sure. There probably won’t be a #NoDaisyRedemptionArc this season, definitely no shooting of dogs. It’s quite likely she’s still in the grieving process over Lincoln and what really should have been, as it’s only six months that have passed.

The show might line her up to be the next “big bad” that SHIELD has to take down… or convert back to their side. With a new 10pm start time for Agents of SHIELD next season, the dark possibilities can come out. It should be fun to watch the potential of Daisy’s powers against the world, especially now that she’s under her own influence and not Hive’s.
