Drive Director Wants To Do A Batgirl Movie
The director of the hit indie film drive would really like to make a superhero movie, especially one starring Batgirl
Nicolas Winding Refn directed the recently released Neon Demon, which is a horror film about the real price of beauty. But Refn is far better known for Drive, a 2011 indie action film starring Ryan Gosling as a stunt driver by day and a wheelman for heists by night.
So what would Nicolas Winding Refn like to do next? He seems real amped to do a superhero film. Specifically a female-led superhero film. He had expressed a lot of interest in doing a Wonder Woman film back in 2011, but obviously that gig went to Patty Jenkins, who is directing the solo Wonder Woman movie do out next year. But Refn still really wants to do a superhero film, particularly one with a female lead:
"God, I would love to make one, it would probably be great fun. I just don’t know when it’s going to happen. I very much enjoy my freedom creatively, but I also would love to make one of those big Hollywood films that costs a lot of money and has a lot of people running around with cell phones and all that insanity. What ones are left. You know the one I want to do? I want to make Batgirl. Let’s get Warner working on it."
Next: Jared Leto: It Was An Honor To Play The Joker
I’m all for getting Batgirl here own big screen movie, and someone who enthusiastically wants to do the film is probably a good choice, but I have no idea if Renfr would be the right director for such a job. It also might depend a lot on what they are going for with Batgirl. Are we talking more classic Batgirl? Gail Simone Batgirl? Batgirl of Burnside? Renfr may be great for one style of Batgirl but not another. It’s all just wishful thinking til a Batgirl movie is announced anyways, which hopefully isn’t too far off in the future (or at least a TV Show).
