Suicide Squad: DC’s Next Disappointment?

Will Suicide Squad be just another disappointing DC Film ?

We are coming ever closer to DC’s next big film Suicide Squad.  With DC’s track record of late it is fair for fans to begin to wonder if the Suicide Squad will even be worth the price of admission.  Suicide Squad is an interesting choice to make to release right after Batman v. Superman when it failed to meet expectations.  Not only did it not meet expectations it came nowhere close to the success that Warnder Bros & DC execs were hoping for.

After a lot of mixed reactions as to why the film failed DC and WB (As well as many others) seemed to become united on the fact it was the lack of hope in the story (Something that Marvel has captured so well). Fast forward a few weeks and they cannot change the course of DC films already in progress, before the decision that their movies were a bit too dark and you have Suicide Squad. While I am a fan of the Suicide Squad story, and understand why it is needed to be released now it is contrary to what DC says they are trying to do.

Suicide Squad will offer zero hope in my opinion it is after all all about the worst villains in all of DC with nothing more then a Batman cameo to balance out the villains. It is for that reason that I believe the Suicide Squad will again disappoint fans and critics and even more importantly in the box office. DC films have lost the casual fans trust and the Suicide Squad does not look intriguing enough to bring them back in.

Marvel slowly gained their fans trust as well as casual Marvel fans by going with their best stories first (Iron Man,Avengers, and Captain America). They devoted time to each character and developed them to a point where their characters could offer both hope and a darker theme at the same time. This is what DC is trying so desperately to accomplish. Batman in my opinion is a better character with more intricate story lines than any Marvel character will ever be. The problem is not with the character or the story of it but the story tellers and the way they are choosing to present Batman in this movie-verse.

While I think DC is headed in the right direction and remain hopeful Suicide Squad will find success I believe it will be next in a line of box office disappointments for DC. The biggest test will be not Suicide Squad or its success but the movies beyond it and whether or not they can be successful at bringing in a bit of a more hopeful theme without changing the characters completely.  Until they have proven they can do that I would not set my hopes high for films like Suicide Squad.
