DC Jumps in June, Marvel Still Rules Sales
Rebirth was definitely a huge boost to DC, but it didn’t really put a dent in Marvel’s dominance
So has Rebirth really helped DC become a stronger contender in the comics marketplace? Well, the June sales would suggest yes, but still not really in a position to really challenge Marvel. Essentially DC had a huge jump in market percentage, jumping from about 25% in May to a much higher 32% in June. That’s excellent news for DC, and obviously rode strongly on Rebirth one-shots and new #1 issues, which took many spots in the top ten. That being said, it didn’t really seem to put much if any dent in Marvel’s overall sales. Last month they owned around 45% of the market and while it is a tad lower this month, it’s still just over 44%. So it’s more like DC improved against other smaller competition like Image & IDW rather than against the other major player in the comics market.
But in a change from last month, while Marvel also dominated the top ten, this month DC pretty much owned the category. Marvel still had the top seller spot with Civil War II #1, but titles like Batman Rebirth #1, Batman #1 Wonder Woman #1 and Dark Knight III: The Master Race #5 owned the top ten.
Next: Preview Of All-Star Batman #1
This trend is actually pretty likely to continue next month, as we are still getting a lot of #1’s from DC with re-launched or entirely new titles (like All-Star Batman, Batgirl & The Birds Of Prey, Super Sons, etc.) and so far the reaction to Rebirth seems to be positive. It will be months before we see if Rebirth has the kind of lasting impact to provide a long term lift to DC’s sales however. But this trend should continue for at least the next few months as more #1s and brand new titles are introduced.
