Jared Leto: Joker Takes Over Your Life

Jared Leto says there was no rules playing the clown prince of crime in Suicide Squad

So we’ve all heard the stories about how Jared Leto got very deep into the character of the Joker for Suicide Squad. It was to the point where he was in character the entire time the movie was filming, he was extremely intimidating, and he sent most of the cast very bizarre gifts that under other circumstances might result in restraining orders. Most of the cast claimed they didn’t meet the real Jared Leto until well after the movie was done filming. It was method acting on a level most never attempt. And according to Jared Leto himself, it was necessary for The Joker to take over his life in order to bring out the best performance:

"You’re kind of walking upon hallowed ground, and it deserves the very best that you can do. It takes over your life and that’s what I needed to do for myself. You don’t know what the Joker is going to do next; you never do. It was intoxicating to have no rules."

So, I have a question. Did Jared Leto actually receive any real direction from David Ayer on the set of Suicide Squad? I mean according to everyone, Leto was just in character the entire time, everyone was intimidated by him and I’ve definitely seen at least one story where Ayer’s at least implied Leto just sort of did his own crazy thing. I’m not saying that won’t necessarily result in a good performance. Jared Leto is am award-winning actor, he probably has some idea how to tackle a movie role. I’m just wondering if he just came in did whatever he wanted in a scene and everyone else just worked around that. We’ll find out when Suicide Squad opens August 5th.
