Tattoos Are A Big Element Of Suicide Squad
The importance of Joker’s and others’ tattoos in Suicide Squad
One of the more controversial aspects of Suicide Squad well before the movie even really got into production was the appearance of Jared Leto’s Joker. Sure, he had the green hair and the bleach-white skin, but he was also covered in all kinds of tattoos, which was certainly a drastic change in look from how the character is traditionally portrayed.
Suicide Squad producers Richard Suckle & Andy Horowitz explained that it was a big part of doing something different with the character and he’s not the only one tattoos are a big part of the character design for. For example El Diablo has gang tattoos to represent his past.
Next: How The Characters Were Chosen For Suicide Squad
I don’t think anyone is opposed to the characters of Suicide Squad having tattoos, but especially on Joker it definitely looks to the point where they might even distract from the performance. I mean they talk about how Joker’s iconic smile will be represented by a tatto on his hand that he then puts in front of his face. Granted, that could come across as incredibly creepy an awesome. It could also come across as ridiculous and silly.
Luckily, good performances can definitely overshadow things like questionable character designs, and every ounce of footage I have seen thus far from the trailers suggests that the entire cast is really bringing their A game for Suicide Squad and it should result in a fun movie with great performances all around regardless of how many tattoos someone is toting. Suicide Squad is opening in just a few weeks on August 5th, and I think most of the talk about tattoos will fade away after people have actually seen the film (for better or worse).
