Suicide Squad To Have $125 Million Weekend?

Suicide Squad is tracking for a pretty phenomenal opening weekend

Opening weekends can often make or break a movie. There’s no doubt that’s Deadpool’s massive success and long legs can be attributed to the fact that it blew away weekend expectations. On the other side of the coin, Batman v Superman kind of owes the fact that it was merely something that underperformed rather than one of the biggest flops of the year to the fact that it had an absolutely huge opening weekend (only to have the bottom drop out mere days later).

Sometimes almost as important can be how a film is tracking for an opening weekend. That means what industry insiders believe a film is going to make it’s opening weekend. There are outliers like Deadpool that massively exceed expectations, but generally these are right on the money and it’s already a known how welll a film will do.

So, in a few weeks, we have our next big comic book movie of 2016, Suicide Squad. How do insiders think it will do? According to the Hollywood Reporter, it might just be the biggest August movie of all time.

Basically, early tracking puts Suicide Squad at $125 million for it’s opening weekend. That is shy of Batman v Superman’s $166 million weekend, but it’s far more fare to compare Suicide Squad to something like Guardians of The Galaxy, after all most of the characters aren’t that well known to the larger public. Guardians of The Galaxy currently holds the top box office opening record for August at roughly $94 million.

So if Suicide Squad is anywhere close to that estimate, it will easily claim that record and already be one of the top grossing films of the year. Sounds like a success. Would it be super awkward if it actually has legs and outgrosses Batman v Superman? Suicide Squad opens in theaters August 5th.
