Suicide Squad Reviews Motivate Justice League
Justice League’s Ezras Miller talks about Suicide Squad’s critical reception and how that impacts the Justice League cast
There’s no denying that the DC film universe is off to a fairly shaky start. The latest release, Suicide Squad, had a record-breaking box office at the weekend, but has been almost universally panned by critics. Hopefully the box office numbers will hold, but it would obviously be nice to have a film that’s both a critical & commercial success. And not to look past Wonder Woman, which looks amazing, but I think most eyes are on Justice League to really right the ship so to speak for DC films. What does the reception for Suicide Squad mean to the cast of Justice League? Ezra Miller, who plays The Flash in Justice League (and has a very quick cameo in Suicide Squad), commented on that exact thing in an interview with MTV:
"You needn’t look any further than the Suicide Squad director and cast response to the negative reviews to feel how negative critiques motivate us. Ultimately, we can’t base anything on [the critical response]. As artists, we aim to please absolutely everybody with our work, but we also know that we have to keep expressing ourselves as best as we can express ourselves."

You can tell that Suicide Squad was certainly a victim of being made when Warner Bros. thought that the grimdark murdverse of Zack Snyder was the way to go for DC movies, than drastically trying to change course even though Suicide Squad had been well underway. Hopefully Justice League, even though it’s still being directed by Snyder, will be handled well enough by Geoff Johns and Ben Affleck that it is both a critical and commercial success that DC has been desperately trying to get (again, Wonder Woman notwithstanding). Because honestly, if Justice League is also a disappointment critically as well as financially, that may be what actually send Warner Bros. and DC back to the drawing board yet again.
