Get your first look at Gotham’s Jervis Tetch aka The Mad Hatter!

It seems like the appearance of Jervis Tetch, the Alice In Wonderland-obsessed Mad Hatter, has been teased forever on Gotham. Stars of the show were talking about him making an appearance not long after season one wrapped. And he was teased in one episode of Gotham in particular, with Hugo Strange reading lines from the Lewis Carrol classic, implying that it was a personality he was going to imprint on one of his unfortunate experiments. Now the Mad Hatter will most definitely be appearing in season three of Gotham, being played by Walking Dead alumni Benedict Samuel. Albeit with a slight twist. "Jervis Tetch is a talented hypnotist teetering on the edge of madness. He arrives in Gotham with an unwavering desire to find his sister, Alice, a young woman who went missing in the city years ago. It is anyone’s guess just how far down the rabbit hole he’s willing to go in order to find her."

Well Hatter fans can spot a couple of super big differences right off the bat. Jervis Tetch certainly is in the business of mind control, but almost always through technology. This version uses hypnotism. And they put a more personal spin on his “Alice”, as she is his sister. In most versions Alice is someone he applies traits of the main character of the book to, whether they actually apply to this person or not. It can be someone he knows (in Batman: The Animated Series it was a co-worker) or just a random stranger. We’ll have to see how his quest for his sister has him cross paths with the other inhabitants of Gotham when season 3 premieres of Fox this Fall.
