Suicide Squad Has BvS-like Second Weekend

Suicide Squad wins its second weekend in theaters, but suffers a massive drop in the process

It’s deja vu all over again. Just like Batman v Superman, Suicide Squad spent its first several fays smashing records. Best opening in August, best Monday & Tuesday in August, etc. But again you can pretty much chalk that up to some really great marketing. In its second weekend, Suicide Squad tells an all-too familiar and sobering story.

Suicide Squad took in 43.8 million to end its second weekend at #1, but that represents a stunning 67% drop from the previous weekend. Batman v Superman had a similar drop in its second weekend  and lost a narrow battle to a middling comedy for the top spot in it’s third. This already seemingly might be a similar pattern with Suicide Squad, which will probably fall drastically again next weekend, up against fairly decent competition like War Dogs. It’s been reported that Suicide Squad needs to take in $750-$800 million total just to break even. Considering how Batman v Superman performed and these two movies are on a similar path, reaching that number seems unlikely.

The real question is will this continue to be the pattern with DC films and how long can they afford for this to happen? These last couple of films you can sort of blame on being pre-Geoff Johns being president of DC films. Arguably Wonder Woman (though I think that was mostly done before Johns was given his position) & especially Justice League won’t have that excuse. If those follow the same pattern as  previous fims, I really don’t see how WB has any choice but to go back to the drawing board yet again. Suicide Squad certainly seems like a movie that was a victim of being caught between shifting directions, so hopefully after this we’ll see notable improvement in future DC films.
