Batman v Superman Still Dominates Video Sales

Batman v Superman is still the #1 selling movie 4 weeks after release

Well maybe it will make that money back in home video sales. Batman v Superman has been out for a month now, and is still topping the sales charts on both Blu-Ray and DVD. It’s closest competitor? Well maybe not surprisingly, it’s another divisive film starring Batman. The number 2 selling movie is the animated adaptation of The Killing Joke.

Neither film reviewed particularly well and both have been very divisive among both fans and critics alike. Killing Joke has much smaller stakes than Batman v Superman being a direct to video movie. But it also broke records big time in it’s extremely limited theatrical release.

This could also be due to lack of serious competition, however. It’s closest competitors are movies that have been out for longer periods, Zootopia and Deadpool. They take up the #3 and #4 spots on the sales charts respectively.

I honestly don’t expect this new to change for a few more weeks. There’s no serious competition and even if something from this Summer got rushed to home video, big Summer movies in general have been a disappointment. But this will likely change pretty drastically when Captain America: Civil War comes out. And not just because it’s a Marvel movie. It’s also just a matter of timing. Captain America: Civil War is due out September 13th. That’s three weeks from now. If it doesn’t dethrone Batman v Superman it’s first week out, after BvS has been out on video for at that point nearly two months, that would spell serious trouble for interest in Marvel movies. I wonder if that will just be the pattern with DC movies. They disappoint in the theaters but perform extremely well on home video. Guess we’ll see what happens with Wonder Woman and Justice League.
