Suicide Squad Loses Top Box Office Spot In 4th Week

Suicide Squad knocked down to number 2 in its 4th weekend at the box office

Suicide Squad was king of a fairly tepid box office Summer. It had the biggest August debut in history and remained at the top for three weeks. Admittedly that was against rather weak competition. But the ride at the end for the latest DCEU movie had to end sometime. And the one to do it was a movie whose entire budget probably wouldn’t even cover Will Smith’s salary.

Don’t Breathe, a very well-reviewed horror film that only cost $10 million to make, made a whopping 26 million. Any movie that makes more than double it’s entire budget in it’s opening weekend is pretty much the biggest success story of the year. Suicide Squad still came in second at $12 million. That’s a steep but not unexpected drop for a movie that has been in theaters for several weeks. When all is said and done, the movie will probably just break $300 million U.S. and might even pass $700 million for its global box office take.

So is the movie a success? I mean, any movie that is going to end up at around $700 million should be considered a success, right? Especially for a movie missing out on that crucial China box office.

Well it depends. For a movie that opened that huge, it should’ve easily taken Guardians Of The Galaxy’s place as the top August movie of all time. But the bottom fell out so quick it had no chance. And what was Warner Bros. expectation of the film’s performance? If they expected it to make more money, then that’s still a disappointment. Will this affect crowds showing up for future DCEU films if they gave both Batman v Superman & Suicide Squad a chance, but were generally disappointed in both? Would they show up for a Suicide Squad sequel? Will anything short of an out and out utter failure cause Warner Bros. to just start all over again sometime in the future? We’ll probably find out these questions in the coming year. For the record, I rather enjoyed Suicide Squad. You can still check it out in theaters now.
