SDCC Exclusive WCW Shockmaster Figure Review
By Brian Thomer
At this year’s Comic-Con International: San Diego, Mattel released an exclusive WWE Elite Collection Flashback action figure of one of the all-time awesomely bad characters in WCW’s Shockmaster.
Mattel is, currently, selling off the remaining stock of their Comic-Con International: San Diego exclusives on their Matty Collector collectibles website. Among them is the Shockmaster action figure, representing a classic, for all the wrong reasons, debut from the defunct World Championship Wrestling organization.
The Shockmaster Incident
Back in the early ’90s, Sting teased the reveal of one of his partners for an upcoming War Games match at Fall Brawl. Enter: The Shockmaster! He made his “shocking” debut by crashing through a wall, then promptly tripping midway through. He stumbled to the ground and, as a result, his spray painted and glittered Stormtrooper helmet went rolling. The Shockmaster did his best to recover, but excitement for the mystery partner quickly fizzled. The character faded away shortly thereafter.
The debut, however, made a lasting impression with fans as one of the unintentionally funniest moments in professional wrestling history. Mattel masterfully captures this moment in the new WWE Elite Collection Flashback WCW Shockmaster action figure.

Mattel thought this exclusive figure through and this includes the packaging. The figure is positioned upside down to mimic Shockmaster’s fall, additionally, the card backing itself has a giant tear through it to resemble the piece of dry wall that the wrestler came crashing through. Additionally, the manufacturer knew full well that fans would not be able to resist removing this figure, collectible or not, from its packaging. Therefore, they included a pull out cardboard cut out of the busted-through wall. Now fans can re-create Shockmaster’s most famous moment over and over again.
The figure itself is also a triumph. It stands over 6 inches tall with 25 points of articulation. There are points at the knees, ankles, wrists, elbows, shoulders, chest and more, as a result, a number of classic wrestling poses are possible.
Shockmaster’s look is pretty generic with his wrestling attire limited to basically a pair of jeans and boots. He does sport a rather magnificent mullet, however. The real topper is the, well, look of “shock” on his face and one can easily imagine that this was his expression as he realized he was headed straight to the ground during his big moment.
The Fashion Brings This Character to Life
The character’s, and, therefore, the figure’s, distinctive look comes from his two accessories. First, there is the awful long puffy sleeveless coat. On the figure, however, it is removable. If only someone had removed it from wardrobe, then The Shockmaster may have had a chance of actually being intimidating.
The second accessory, which is even more questionable than the fashion sense of the coat, is the wrestler’s helmet. Literally, this is a “Star Wars” Stormtrooper helmet spray painted, including the eyes, then covered in glitter. One can easily liken it to a student waking in the morning, then realizing that today is the science fair and he or she has done nothing to prepare for it. How the “creative” minds at WCW did not realize fans would take one look at it and instantly see this knockoff for what it was is utterly mind-boggling. Kudos to Mattel for being able to represent the helmet so well, despite not having the “Star Wars” action figure license.
Little Room for Improvement
Mattel crafted an excellent collectible here, as a result, there is only a little one could suggest to improve upon it. Specifically, they could have included a voice chip to re-create the terrible voice over from the character’s initial appearance. If Mattel had also included an interchangeable hand with index finger extended, then fans could do a shot-for-shot re-creation. Even without them, Mattel did an amazing job re-creating this “one hit wonder” of a wrestling character.
If one does not miss one’s last chance at this spot on representation of a classic moment in professional wrestling history, then head over to Matty Collector now for your WWE Elite Collection Flashback WCW Shockmaster action figure from Mattel.
