“Thor: Ragnarok” could have more comedy in it than you think

Earlier this week, Marvel Studios revealed that awesome video from San Diego Comic Con of what Thor did during Captain America: Civil War. If you missed it, our own Steve has you covered over here.

We’ve already had our own Nathaniel cover how Thor: Ragnarok might be the most unique Phase Three film for the MCU. But I want to talk about what else it might cover that Nathaniel didn’t mention:

Might Thor: Ragnarok be the funniest of the Phase Three movies?

Firstly, let me preface this with the following: It most likely will be beaten in the funny category by Ant-Man and the Wasp in 2018. And a movie like Thor with so much mythos can’t be a straight-out comedy. If anything, it may have a few more jokes than The Dark World.

Regardless, let’s have some fun theorizing why it could be the funniest of these upcoming movies.

It may come as a surprise to some of you that Chris Hemsworth has some comedic chops. From his loveably stupid assistant Kevin in this year’s Ghostbusters to his stint as the host of Saturday Night Live, Hemsworth packs a surprisingly funny punch.

Not to mention that Tom Hiddleston’s Loki got the majority of laughs in Thor: The Dark World. Hiddleston also dabbles in laughs (see: anything with Josh Horowitz, sometimes including Jessica Chastain).

Plus, Mark Ruffalo joins the ranks for Thor: Ragnarok, and his deadpan humor beats all. And let us not forget that Hulk and Loki have not faced each other since the infamous beatdown in The Avengers. Putting these three in a room together… I can only imagine the possibilities.

Thor works best as a comedic character when he doesn’t realize his comments come off as odd. “Know this, Son of Coul” to Phil Coulson in Thor comes to mind first. Naturally, the Civil War video Marvel released is just one big joke. And yet his observations on Thanos (purple, magic glove, doesn’t like standing up) are hilariously accurate.

And, as Nathaniel said, Jeff Goldblum graces the lineup. That makes this movie uniquely funny already.

If anything, can we get a petition for a post-credits scene where Thor attempts to use a cell phone? If Howard the Duck gets his own scene, why can’t Thor’s technical failings?

Thor: Ragnarok graces theaters on November 3, 2017.
