Rocksteady is ready to move on to something besides Batman after Arkham VR

Rocksteady Games is responsible for easily making the best superhero games of the last 8 or so years. With Batman: Arkham Asylum, they raised the bar for what a licensed superhero game could be. They continued the formula with much success in bigger sequels Arkham City and Arkham Knight. And they just wrapped up work on Arkham VR for the upcoming PlayStation VR launch next month.

In case you haven’t noticed, that’s a lot of time spent working on just Batman. So after Arkham VR, Rocksteady games is ready for their next project, and whatever it is, it won’t be featuring a billionaire in a cape and cowl. Producer Dax Ginn talked about severing ties with the franchise and where they might go next:

"We’re in a very enviable position where we have some time and space to decide what we’re doing next. We can sit back and think what our dream game would be, and we have Warner Bros.’ support to do that.I think we’ve proven that we’re a hardworking team, we work well together, and we can really decide what’s best creatively for our own destiny.I think there’s a little bit of sadness on the team. It feels like… breaking up? [The mood] is really split – there’s a feeling in the office like, it’s definitely time to do something else – we all accept that. But we all know Batman so well – we all feel comfortable in the Arkhamverse. We’re definitely letting go of that comfort blanket and putting ourselves in the position where whatever we do next is going to feel very different. There’s always an anxiety associated with change and that’s where we want to be. We want to feel uncomfortable because we want to make awesome stuff."

So don’t look for Rocksteady’s next game to just be the same formula and maybe a different skin. Though that certainly doesn’t rule out making another superhero title. Batman: Arkham VR will release in October as a PlayStation VR exclusive.
