Arkham VR Review Round-Up

Arkham VR seems to be one of the better games of the PlayStation VR launch line-up

The PlayStation VR releases in stores next week, but a lot of reviews of the hardware and most of the launch line-up of games is dropping today. One game we at Caped Crusades are of course particularly interested in is Batman: Arkham VR from Rocksteady Games, as it supposedly truly allows you to “be the Batman” by stepping into his boots and seeing his world right in front of you through the technology of virtual reality. Sadly, we won’t be able to review it here, but I do have a nice round up of opinions from many major sites on Arkham VR.

Game Informer says it’s basically a proof-of-concept demo. One that you can finish in a session. But it feels incredibly cool and you’ll want to come back to it. They also see a lot of potential for concepts to be used in a more full-fleshed out Batman VR game.

IGN noted the game was pretty much a “one-and-done” sort of deal, but enjoyed the time and had fun “fooling around in front of a mirror and making Batman look like a dancing moron.” And really, what other game can you do that with?

Gamespot said Arkham VR is incredibly immersive, but the actual gameplay experience is shallow.

Digital Spy has the highest opinion of the game, calling it the best game you’ll play of the PlayStation VR’s launch line-up. Given that it’s an hour or two long, that doesn’t speak well of the rest of the line-up…

VG 24/7 gives high praise as well, noting “I was a massive VR cynic before Arkham VR, but it’s games like this that are managing to slowly change my perception of what VR is and can be.”

Finally, Kotaku notes that while the experience can be immersive, it’s a little ruined by the PlayStation VR’s limitations of 1:1 movement.

Launches for new hardware, especially ones showcasing new technology are often full of half-baked ideas for games at launch. Arkham VR seems to be one of the standouts and considering it’s $20, that may be a bad sign for the rest of the line-up, but at least you can be relatively sure that you’ve got something cool to show off with your new system. The game launches along with PlayStation VR’s big launch next week on October 13th.
