The Flash Season 3, Episode 3 Recap: “Magenta”

Harrison Wells and Jesse Quick pay a visit from Earth-2, while The Flash investigates a new meta named “Magenta” with ties to “Flashpoint.”

Barry Allen is determined to go on an official date with Iris West. Of course, with this being based on a comic book, things don’t go as planned. Also, friends of #TeamFlash Harrison Wells and Jesse Quick hop over from Earth-2 with a surprise in tow. Finally, another new meta named Magenta is created by Dr. Alchemy to pester The Flash.

Speed Force-Induced Summary

Barry finally had the honor of kissing Iris after he erased the previous times’ post-“Flashpoint.” Now he’s arranged a romantic date for the two, which keeps getting interrupted by Barry running off to be The Flash. Barry just can’t catch a break.

More from TV

Meanwhile, there’s a breach at S.T.A.R. Labs. #TeamFlash waits on pins and needles to see what new threat emerges when it’s revealed to be Harrison Wells and Jesse Quick from Earth-2!

We learn Jesse now has speed-force powers after the particle accelerator exploded last season. Wally West was also exposed to speed-force energies along with Jesse, but so far he has no powers. This totally bums Wally out since he looks up to The Flash and wants to be a hero.

Wells and Jessie catch up on all the “Flashpoint” shenanigans while Jesse tests her powers on the brand-new Speed Track. Wells and Jesse retained their original memories pre-“Flashpoint” because Earths in the multiverse aren’t affected by time travel. An example of this is when Wells and Barry don’t recognize the Speed Track. Another funny side effect of “Flashpoint” is Wells adding “NOT!” to the end of his sentences when he wants to make a point.

Next, we move over to the introduction of Frankie a.k.a. Magenta. She’s a teenager living with her mother and abusive stepfather, who she accidentally kills when her powers manifest. Magenta can control metal, kind of like Magento from the X-Men.

Wells is nervous for Jesse to use her powers. He wants to keep her safe, but she wants to use her powers for good. Wells asks everyone to talk some sense into Jesse, with Wally finally giving it a try. Jesse tells Wally how her powers manifested themselves when she was in a dangerous, stressful situation. This gives Wally the bright idea to try it himself by jumping into oncoming traffic. Luckily Jesse saves him before he becomes road kill.

In the end, Wells gives Jesse his blessing to “Run, Jesse, Run” and she teams up with The Flash to stop Magenta. She reveals she used to get headaches and heard a voice speaking in her head, which more than likely is Dr. Alchemy.

Highlight

Cisco Ramon creates a suit for Jesse, and she’s given the codename Jesse Quick. It was awesome to see her new uniform, which is patterned off of Barry’s. Same matching color scheme. I can’t wait to see her rocking it in future episodes.

Closing Thoughts

With “Flashpoint” behind us, The Flash appears to be moving back into its formulaic “Villain-of-the-Week” routine. It’s worked out in the past for The Flash and I’m confident fans won’t mind. The mystery of who Dr. Alchemy is will continue to grow, plus there’s the subplot of when will Wally West gain his powers.
