Arrow Season 5, Episode 4 Synopsis: “Penance”
By Steve Lam
This week on Arrow, Oliver and Lyla execute a plan to break Diggle out of prison.
Last week on Arrow‘s “A Matter of Trust” episode, the recruits, against Oliver’s orders, went on a mission to stop drug dealers. The mission goes awry and a new enemy is created—stronger and more dangerous than before.

Meanwhile, Thea had to deal with a nosy reporter who fabricated sensationalist news in order to get ratings. In this case, it was the reporting of the hiring of Quentin Lance, who was exposed to be an alcoholic. Thea’s attempts to quell the drama only made matters worse, causing Oliver more headaches as the new Mayor of Star City.
Felicity later suggested that Oliver start trusting his team. They defied orders because they didn’t trust him. The team quickly reformed a plan and successfully brought down the drug dealers and their leader.
Later, disheartened by the results of her own actions, Thea submitted her resignation. However, Oliver wanted her to stay on board and stemmed the controversy by making a public announcement about the hiring of Lance. Thea later made it clear to the reporter that if the badgering didn’t stop, the reporter would definitely regret it.
In the final scenes, Lyla makes an unexpected visit, asking for help with Diggle’s situation. This week, Oliver and Layla will attempt to break Diggle out of prison while the city is under siege by Tobias Church. Here’s the official synopsis:
“Penance”
"OLIVER STEPS IN FOR DIGGLE — Oliver (Stephen Amell) and Lyla (guest star Audrey Marie Anderson) team up on a secret mission for Diggle (David Ramsey). Felicity (Emily Bett Rickards) finds out and disapproves of the plan and opts to stay behind. When Tobias Church (guest star Chad L. Coleman) launches a deadly assault against the city, Felicity must decide if she wants to send the recruits out sans the Green Arrow."
