The Flash Season 3, Episode 4 Recap: “The New Rogues”

As The Flash helps mentor Jesse Quick, the duo must also deal with the appearance of two new villainous metahumans—Mirror Master and Top.

It never occurred to me that Mirror Master hasn’t appeared in the previous two seasons of The Flash. “The New Rogues” sees the debut of Mirror Master and Top, as we also get a guest-appearance from Leonard Snart, a.k.a. Captain Cold.

Speed Force-Induced Summary

We flashback (but not “Flashpoint,” get it?) three years to the night of the particle accelerator explosion. Mirror Master and Top get into a confrontation with Snart over how the crime business should be run. Just before Snart puts a bullet through Mirror Master’s forehead, the particle accelerator explosion sends a wave of energy through the abandoned building. Top wakes up to find Mirror Master has disappeared.

Jumping back to the present, we pick up with The Flash and Jesse Quick training. You can tell Barry is loving having another speedster to mentor. An enjoyable moment for fans at home is watching Barry turn into Oliver Queen, dispensing sage knowledge to a young trainee.

More from TV

More hilarity ensues when it comes to the public displays of affection between Barry and Iris West. Iris is all for some outward lovey-dovey-ness, but Barry would prefer not to do it in front of Joe West. Barry and Joe then have “The Talk.” One can imagine how well that went.

Meanwhile, Mirror Master reappears after being trapped in the mirror dimension for the last three years. To him, time stood still and he’s only been gone a couple of minutes. He has the power to travel through reflective glass, while Top was granted vertigo powers. Mirror Master proceeds to target members of Snart’s old gang.

Harrison Wells is starting to get antsy on Earth-1. While he wants to return to Earth-2, he doesn’t want to leave #TeamFlash without a resident science genius. Wells, Cisco Ramon, and Caitlin Snow begin their search across the multiverse for a Harrison Wells that looks trustworthy enough to add to their team. In a cute moment, we learn that while Wells wants to go home, he’d rather not feel like he’s being replaced.

An awkward date night at Casa de West is luckily interrupted when a metahuman alert goes off. Jesse Quick tags along with The Flash to take on Mirror Master and Top. Top induces vertigo upon Jesse, which causes Barry to end up trapped inside a mirror.

#TeamFlash works feverishly to find a solution to free The Flash. Iris even lends some help, if you count checking out her butt in Barry’s mirror. Wells and Cisco create a device to try and freeze the mirror long enough to allow Barry to pass through, but it fails. This allows Caitlin to secretly use her cold powers to complete the process and free Barry.

With The Flash back in action, he teams up with Jesse Quick again and they take down Mirror Master and Top. As the episode ends, Harrison Wells and Jesse Quick head back to Earth-2, with a new Harrison Wells from Earth-19 taking his place.

Highlight

The budding romance between Jesse Quick and Wally West. The two of them make an adorable couple. Wally tried to fight his feelings for Jesse in the beginning, but that was due to his fears of her returning to Earth-2 and them not seeing each other much. By the end of “The New Rogues,” Wally admitted his true feelings for Jesse.

Speaking or romances, there appears to be love in the air for Joe West and Detective Cecile.

Closing Thoughts

“The New Rogues” lacked much from Dr. Alchemy and Julian Albert. Even with their absences, the episode included enough entertainment that I hardly noticed. This is the true mark of an exceptional television show.
