DC’s Legends of Tomorrow surprises us again with its latest episode, “Abominations.” We see a bit of character building and a new arc in friendships. But the show doesn’t forget its fun-filled roots and strategically inserts moments of levity.

Legendary Recap

An escape pod follows a timeship that’s hurtling through the timestream. Inside the pod, the pilot makes a distress call. The pod soon crashes to Earth in 1863 Mississippi. The pilot exits and he’s immediately surrounded by Confederate soldiers, but he transforms and attacks all of them.

Martin and Jax are obsessed with 2056 Barry’s message. Sara calls them to the library where the team has intercepted the distress call. They conclude that the pilot is a time pirate. The team will need to find his location and fix any time aberrations.

Ray, due to having no real abilities after the destruction of his ATOM suit, will stay behind. Martin, knowing what they’ll be encountering during the Civil War era, wants to protect Jax, but Jax is adamant in going.

They arrive at the location and Mick proceeds to destroy the pod. Hearing cries for help in the distance, the team goes to help. They meet Henry Scott, a former slave and dispatch for the Union. The conversation is quickly ended when a pack of Confederate zombies attack. Henry, mortally wounded from a bayonet, passes his mission on to Jax.

Martin has identified the substance as TX-90—a biochemical weapon that infected the time pirate and now responsible for this zombie outbreak. To everyone’s surprise, Mick is now infected and ends up in the medical bay.

Checking the new timeline, the Legends discover that the Confederates won. Further research reveals that Henry’s mission was to find Confederate plans and deliver them to Ulysses S. Grant. Jax takes it upon himself to complete the task, partnering up with Amaya.

Jax and Amaya stake out a plantation where the plans are supposedly hidden. Nate and Sara are quickly captured by Union soldiers and brought to Grant.

Meanwhile, Ray has completed a vaccine, but the injection doesn’t go as planned. Mick quickly turns into a zombie and Martin and Ray barely escape. It also doesn’t help that Martin has an irrational fear of zombies.

Jax pretends to be a slave and makes his way into the mansion. He finds nothing, but is intercepted by slave owners who chain him up in the barn. Sara finally convinces Grant that zombies are real when she presents a still-kicking zombie head.

Martin and Ray reenter the medical bay, and find that Mick has escaped. They’re soon attacked in the hall and end up locking themselves in the gally.

Jax learns of the horror of the slaves’ situation. Outside, Amaya grows concerned and enters the mansion where she allows herself to be caught. When they bring her to the barn, she attacks her captor and frees Jax. The rest of the slaves follow when one of them identifies Amaya’s amulet as a legendary symbol of her tribe.

Ray believes that his vaccine didn’t work because it was injected. He quickly creates an aerosal delivery using a fire extinguisher.

The attacking zombies have cornered the Union soldiers. Sara formulates a plan after seeing a crate full of nytroglycerin. It will involve Nate using his Citizen Steel abilities.

The plantation is now also overrun by zombies. Jax and a slave head to the mansion to retrieve the plans while Amaya leads the rest to safety. Jax finds the plans, but now they’re cornered by zombies. One of the slave owners refuses to work with Jax and ends up getting killed. Jax and the slave make their way to the top of the mansion where he drops a lantern, incinerating the zombies and causing a fire which burns down the mansion.

Ray gets into the medical bay through the ceiling. But he’s quickly attacked by Mick. It’s now up to the deathly afraid Martin who retrieves the fire extinguisher and finds Ray knocked out cold. Mick quickly ambushes Martin, but Martin is able to discharge the vaccine spray, quickly returning Mick to normal.

Nate runs with a torch, leading the zombies away from the Union camp. He jumps on a crate of nytroglycerin and transforms into Citizen Steel. Igniting the crate, he kills all the zombies in an explosion. In the aftermath, Sara is relieved to find an unharmed Nate buried under piles of charred zombies.

Before leaving, the Legends have spread the vaccine to assure that the zombie epidemic is gone. Jax hands Grant the plans which will guarantee a Union win. When asked for his name, Jax tells Grant that it’s “Henry Scott”—thus, preserving history.

Ray checks up on Mick to see how he’s recovering. Mick, though regretting it later, asks what’s on Ray’s mind. Ray wants to know his place on the team. Mick hands him Snart’s freeze gun and asks if he would like to be his partner.

Martin speaks to Jax about seeing the worst in humanity. Due to their psychic connection, Martin felt the distress and hopelessness that Jax experienced. Though Jax was impressed by the slaves’ ability to retain their dignity, Martin pointed out that Jax was someone who would always cling onto hope, even during the darkest of times.

Legendary Moment(s)

I found myself laughing hysterically at Martin’s “irrational” fear of zombies. Ray’s motivational speech—with the feature of instilling more fear into Martin—was even more hilarious. The two make a great team and I hope to see more of it. However, I have a feeling that the final scenes are foreshadowing more Ray and Mick pairings for the rest of the season.

Thoughts for Tomorrow

“Abominations” was an excellent balance between poignant and funny scenes. Legends of Tomorrow has been knocking it out of the park and the double-meaning behind the episode title “Abominations” is definitely the cherry on top. I also enjoyed Jax’s growth as a character. The restraint he showed due to a focus on the mission was quite impressive. This character has definitely arced since Season 1.
