What Does Mark Hamill Think Of Jared Leto’s Joker?
Mark Hamill has never seen a Joker performance he didn’t like…
For many, the definitive Joker isn’t Cesar Romero, Jack Nicholson or Heath Ledger. It’s Mark Hamill. Sure, a lot more people probably know him as Luke Skywalker from the Star Wars films, but Hamill has a rather large fanbase for his impeccable and defining role as the voice of The Joker starting in 1992 with the seminal Batman: The Animated series and continues the role to this day on various projects (including the upcoming animated series Justice League Action).
Mark Hamill brought a sense of psychotic glee to the role of Joker that no one else has really been able to touch, along with what is easily the definitive Joker laugh. For many, he is the best representation of Joker to date by a long shot.
In a recent interview with Polygon promoting his new show, “Mark Hamill’s Pop Culture Quest”, Hamill was asked what he thought of the latest version of the Joker, which was played by Jared Leto in this year’s Suicide Squad movie.
Hamill said he loved Leto’s version of the Clown Prince of Crime, and he’s never seen a performance of The Joker yet that has made him think “that was terrible”. Hamill thinks the key to enjoying different takes on the character is to look at what each version needs to be for that moment:
"I don’t think there’s a definitive version of the Joker and I don’t think there can be. It’s like Hamlet, really. It’ll be constantly redefined."
