Gotham: The Key In The Emerald And The People After It

On Gotham’s “The Executioner” episode, Bruce, Selina, and Ivy discovered a hidden key in an emerald. What could it lead to and who are the people after them?

Gotham‘s “The Executioner” episode introduced another mystery. This time, it comes in the form of a key. Yep, our famous young billionaire just can’t get a break. Right when his life seems to be getting less complicated and on an upswing (he’s dating Selina, but you wouldn’t know from her reaction), he’s thrown back into some more danger.

The trouble starts when Ivy Pepper uses her newfound seductive powers and feminine wiles to steal an emerald necklace from a shady antiques dealer. And this isn’t an ordinary emerald—the thing looks like it ate other emeralds for breakfast.

Where does a girl go with a giant stolen gem? To her best friend’s place, of course. And, in this case, it’s Selina Kyle’s. However, Ivy revealing her true identity freaks Selina out so much that she calls Bruce for some support. After some extra prodding, Ivy comes clean—she’s in some deep doo-doo.

Before the three know it, crossbow-wielding masked killers are after them. The three make a quick exit through a secret back door. At the docks, Bruce makes an offer to buy the emerald so he can return it to its rightful owner. Thereby, stopping the men from coming after them. Ivy agrees, so the three venture to the antiques dealer’s home.

Arriving at the location, they discover the dealer dead from an arrow through his eye—which meant the crossbow-wielding assailants never worked for him. Selina, in a fit of frustration, throws the emerald, breaking it—revealing a hidden key. Knowing that this could lead to deeper things, Bruce offers Wayne Manor as a safe haven from the killers.

In the final scenes, the masked assailants, led by an unmasked man, rummage through Selina’s belongings. They finally stumble on a hidden newspaper clipping of the Wayne murders—giving away Bruce, Selina, and Ivy’s current whereabouts.

What could this key open and who is this group that’s after Bruce, Selina, and Ivy? Is it a new group? Or is it the Court of Owls rearing its ugly head again. The masked killers certainly look like new assailants. Then again, there’s still a lot we don’t know about the Court.

Another clue to the group could be the unmasked man’s reaction to the newspaper clipping. Is he looking at the clipping as a clue to their whereabouts? Or is he having a light bulb moment—discovering that another Wayne is involved.

What are your theories? Let us know in the comments. With so little to go on, your guess is as good as any.
