Wonder Woman Shield Review: Power Up Dress Up Play

The DC Super Hero Girls inspired Wonder Woman Shield from Mattel allows one to train to be a super hero like the Amazon.

Mattel provided their Wonder Woman Shield role-play accessory, based on the DC Super Hero Girls animated series and line of books, featuring DC Comics‘ Amazon Princess. The shield allows kids to re-create the superhero training regimen Princess Diana goes through at Super Hero High.

Designed with Small Hands in Mind

The design of Wonder Woman’s shield is pretty straightforward. It is a round shield, with a circumference appropriate for children to maneuver. The underside has an adjustable strap with enough slots to fit most children and even adults. The strap may be somewhat difficult for small children to adjust with one hand on their own. So, one tip would be to leave enough room for the child to be able to slide their own hand through. That way, parents will not have to continually re-adjust it every time the child wants to wield the shield.

In front of the strap is a hard plastic handle which houses the trigger for the built-in disc launcher. Mattel thought this through and made the trigger wide enough so that smaller hands would be able to grip and pull it. The unfortunate flip side to that is that there is not enough room on the handle to just grip it without the trigger. This could result in inadvertently firing the disc launcher when gripping the shield during play.

Fire at Will

The disc launching feature works smoothly and as advertised. The top side of the shield pulls open to reveal a slot for the five included star-shaped discs. The discs can be loaded with either the top or bottom face up. This ease of loading will keep the shield frustration-free as kids will not have to struggle to make sure they are loading it a specific way. Who has time for that when the world’s worst super villains are attacking your high school?

The box promotes that the discs can fire up to twenty feet. The launcher can easily make that mark. The discs come out with some power behind them, easily sailing across the room or further. The shield’s instructions prudently warn not to use the launcher at point-blank range. Therefore, if one does not feel a child could be trusted to not fire at others or animals, then perhaps one of the other DC Super Hero Girls role-play accessories would be more appropriate. Such as the Batgirl Utility Belt.

Missed It by That Much

The shield design is aesthetically on point and the launcher works smoothly, so aside from the risk of inadvertently firing discs, the toy is lacking in only one way: if the shield came with a target to aim the discs at, this would be a perfect role-play accessory. That way children would not be forced to develop their own targets, which may or may not work out too well.
