Civil War Journal – Week Twenty-Five: Oh, No, She Didn’t!

Captain Marvel crosses a major line this week, and with only one month left in the event, she may not be able to recover. Find out what she did in here!

Welcome back to Civil War Journal, Bam Smack Pow’s weekly recap column of all things Civil War II. The series heads toward the finish line with a punch everyone’s going to hear about.

What happened? Miles Morales heads to Washington, DC, to prove he won’t kill Captain America like Ulysses predicted. Maria Hill and Captain Marvel deescalate the resulting police standoff, but Iron Man steps in to keep Carol from arresting Miles. In the resulting fight, she punches clean through his armor’s chest plate. Meanwhile, Ulysses’s latest vision takes him to Old Man Logan’s home time, where the mutant tells him that the apocalypse happened because Tony Stark “pushed her too far.” Uh oh.

Was it good? Lots of filler, but the move for Carol to choose to kill a friend? A horrifying payoff to six months of structured plotting. I do not believe Tony’s actually dead, but she doesn’t know that. (Read our full review here!)

Recommendation: Yep, if you are reading Civil War II books, you have to read the parent title.

What happened? Carol uses the infighting on her Alpha Flight team to expose that the Master Of The World has infiltrated their group. Her teammates don’t like her manipulations but recognize that good leaders make tough, unpopular calls. She feels underserving of the public’s love for her after that, but she pledges to earn her accolades.

Was it good? It’s the weakest issue of the arc, probably because it’s so removed from the main crossover and doesn’t seem to line up with the PR problems the post-War books have shown for Carol. But it continues the thoughtful exploration of Captain Marvel’s humanity, the deeply emotional reasons she has gone down this slippery slope. So it’s still great.

Recommendation: Yes, Carol needs an advocate this year, and Captain Marvel is one of the only books supporting her.
