The Flash Season 3, Episode 7 Recap: “Killer Frost”

The Flash has a new threat in the God of Speed Savitar while Caitlin Snow’s alter-ego Killer Frost seeks out Doctor Alchemy for a cure.

“Killer Frost” was directed by Kevin Smith, and he gave fans a whopper of an episode. The Flash was under the assumption that Dr. Alchemy was who he needed to stop, when in fact, the self-proclaimed “God of Speed” Savitar was the ultimate boss. Speaking of Savitar, why does he look like an extra from a Michael Bay Transformers movie?

Savitar proceeds to pummel Barry Allen all across Central City. He’s so fast that only Barry can see him. If it wasn’t for Cisco Ramon and Caitlin Snow stepping in, Barry might be dead. Joe West is beating himself up over Wally being left in a cocoon by Dr. Alchemy. He’s not a scientist like most of the members of #TeamFlash, but he does have detective skills and instincts. Joe takes these abilities to the Central City Police Department to interrogate one of Dr. Alchemy’s followers. The question and answer session is interrupted by Caitlin, who tells Joe that Wally’s awoken from his cocoon. She does this so she can question the prisoner and find Dr. Alchemy, thinking he can cure her meta-abilities.

Caitlin doesn’t find the answers she was looking for and tries to make her escape, but is stopped by CSI Julian Albert. She reveals her powers and takes Julian hostage. #TeamFlash learns of Caitlin’s actions and starts to devise a plan to find her. H.R. makes himself useful and suggests tracking Caitlin the same way #TeamFlash would find Captain Cold.

Caitlin and Julian are in an abandoned building. She forces Julian to use his computer to create an Alchemy-tracking algorithm. The best Julian can do is find two of Dr. Alchemy’s acolytes. While Caitlin is distracted, Julian tips off the cops. The Flash arrives in time to knock Julian out and save Caitlin from a hail of police gunfire. Before being saved, Caitlin drops some truth bombs regarding how Barry’s ruined everyone’s life post-“Flashpoint,” which #TeamFlash can see and hear through security footage. Not being grateful for the save, Caitlin stabs Barry in the leg to immobilize him and escapes.

Cisco is able to hack into Julian’s computer to find the two acolytes Caitlin could possibly go after. He’s reeling from the realization his brother Dante would still be alive if it weren’t for Barry’s time-traveling. Putting his personal feelings aside, Cisco takes one location while Joe/H.R. take the other. During the stakeout, H.R. tells Joe that Barry’s real superpower isn’t speed, it’s his hope. Very touching moment from the newest member of #TeamFlash.

Caitlin ends up choosing the acolyte that Cisco was watching, and they have a metahuman-throwdown in the middle of the street. Barry arrives to give some help, but Caitlin gets the better of him with a chilly Kiss of Death. A Vibe blast from Cisco saves Barry, and they take her back to S.T.A.R. Labs.

It’s a surreal moment to see Caitlin treated like one of the many metahuman prisoners inside S.T.A.R. Labs. Her time in solitary confinement doesn’t last long, though. Joe, tired of the unknown involving Wally’s predicament, decides to cut his son free from his cocoon. Wally appears fine as he emerges, but he’s in a rapid state of vibration and dashes off. #TeamFlash must turn to Caitlin’s expertise in metahumans to find Wally.

In order to gain Caitlin’s trust, Wally lets her loose from her cell. He dares Caitlin to kill him if she’s gone full-supervillain, but she can’t bring herself to harm her friend. Caitlin comes up with a cure for Wally, and Joe is able to find him at the house he grew up in with his mother.

We almost have a happy ending on The Flash but that would be asking for too much. Even though Wally is now a speedster, there’s still the matter of Caitlin kidnapping Julian, who is now awake in a hospital. Barry goes to Julian to ask him not to rat out Caitlin. Surprisingly, Julian agrees, but only if Barry resigns from the CCPD, which he of course does.

The stinger to close out “Killer Frost” is the big reveal that Julian Albert is indeed Dr. Alchemy.

Highlight

The Flash may be the star of the show, but I love seeing Caitlin Snow point out how Barry is constantly screwing up his friends’ lives. If it wasn’t for him creating “Flashpoint,” Cisco’s brother would still be alive and Caitlin wouldn’t be turning into a villain. All facts.

Closing Thought

I wonder when The Flash will have a major villain that isn’t a speedster. We’ve gone from Reverse-Flash to Zoom to now Savitar. Sure they’re all different and offer unique obstacles, but some variety would be nice.

And don’t forget, The CW’s DC TV crossover event begins this week with Supergirl “Medusa.” The event will continue in The Flash “Invasion!,” Arrow “Invasion!,” and conclude in DC’s Legends of Tomorrow “Invasion!.” Make sure to come back to Bam Smack Pow for our full recaps and reviews.
