Teen Titans Go References BvS, Rebirth & Man Of Steel In One Episode

Teen Titans Go makes references to two of DC’s big events of 2016

Teen Titans Go is pretty fast and quick with in-jokes and meta references. The recently-aired episode, “TV Knight” is no exception. But the references were still super timely and covered and managed to poke a little light-hearted fun in the process.

The first reference is directly to this year’s epic DC throwdown that actually wasn’t a throwdown, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. It’s a simple throw-away gag, yet it references arguably one of the most divisive things in the movie. And it’s just Batman’s contact list, so you would have to have seen the movie or at least heard about the particular scene to get the reference:

The contacts “Martha K.” and “Martha W.” are Martha Kent, Superman’s mom, and Martha Wayne, Batman’s mother. This is a reference to the fact that not only do these two superheroes have mothers with the same name, but it’s also a major lynchpin of the film, it’s the only reason Batman doesn’t kill Superman. Some people think it’s brilliant and deep, others think it’s pretty stupid, I go with the later.

The second and third reference in this Teen Titans Go episode are in one more shot together. The Batcave is known for having a giant coin. It’s a souvenir from a case Batman worked on involving Two-Face (it’s also evidence, STOP WITHHOLDING EVIDENCE BATMAN, YOUR CAVE IS FULL OF IT). In the scene, the coin has a different look, and another souvenir next to it references DC’s recent Rebirth event in the comics:

The coin is a reference to Superman breaking Zod’s neck in Man Of Steel, which apparently he just needed a solid neck brace to recover from. The smiley face bloody badge is that of The Comedian from The Watchmen, which Batman found in his Batcave with no explanation as to how it got there and the Watchmen are a major part of DC’s Rebirth storyline.

Not the biggest fan of Teen Titans Go, but the references can be fun sometimes. Watch the latest episodes on Cartoon Network.
