“Marvel’s Agents Of SHIELD” Season 4, Episode 7 Recap: “Deals With Our Devils”

In “Agents of SHIELD’s” return, our team is divided, in separate realities, and trying to figure out what happened in the explosion from last episode.

After a lengthy break, who remembers what’s going on in Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD? Anyone? Oh right, half of the team was sucked into a different dimension/universe/oblivion.

Not-So-Short Summary

May and Mack case the joint in the explosive aftermath, and while everything looks okay, no one is around except for Eli Morrow. He creates pure carbon (currently in the form of spikes) and kills one of the SHIELD teams.

The remainder of our SHIELD compatriots look at the footage from the blast, everyone thinking they’re gone except for Daisy. She says they need Simmons to figure this out, and Director Mace agrees, but then acts very shifty about talking to her.

HENRY SIMMONS

May suggests that they use the Darkhold to figure out where Coulson and Fitz disappeared to. Mack doesn’t want to even open it, he has his own ideas on how to find Eli again. And when he gets shot down by Mace, he takes Robbie’s bike and leaves before the plane takes off.

In an alternate reality/universe, Fitz and Coulson are okay, but invisible to the real world (should I call it Earth-616?), same with Robbie. Thankfully they all figure it out before getting too annoying, and they follow May and Mack back to the base.

Fitz says they’re out of phase with their reality. It’s harder to hear everyone and the lights are darker. Who knows how long they will last in here? They’ve been sucked deeper than Lucy and her crew, and now they must find a way to let reality know they aren’t dead. Coulson tries his hardest with May, and my heart breaks. You can see the history between them in May’s pain.

Unfortunately, Robbie fades fast, growing colder with each passing minute. He doubles over and keeps saying how “he won’t go,” referring to Ghost Rider. As they get dragged further and further into it, the spirit of Ghost Rider flees Robbie’s body and inhabits Mack instead, explaining why he took of in an angry hurry.

CHLOE BENNET

Daisy steals Robbie’s car to follow Mack and finds him in a warehouse talking to himself about being dragged down and how he’s never going back. Daisy asks if he’s okay, and he goes all flame head on her. (Naturally, Robbie follows Daisy all the way.) But he’s talking to Robbie, not himself, as Robbie tries to tell Ghost Rider he needs to take down Eli or it was all for nothing.

He asks for a new deal: get back at Eli and he will settle all of Ghost Rider’s scores. Ghost Rider abides and heads back to Robbie’s body.

May hands off the Darkhold to Dr. Radcliffe, who tries to figure out all this science mumbo jumbo in the wake of Fitz’s disappearance. He opens it, freaks, and slams it shut. Not for human minds, the Darkhold. Aida offers, her LMD status is revealed to May (and Coulson, by Fitz), and May says they need to use her.

When Aida reads the book, it’s in binary. I laughed out loud. She builds a portal that’s pretty cool to watch from the sideways reality, but as it nears completion, Coulson starts to get sucked into a black vortex. Thankfully, Aida gets the portal working and Coulson and Fitz fight to make it back.

To Simmons at her mystery location! She is brought in to Terrigenesis in progress, but this one has been gestating for seven months when it usually lasts a few seconds. She wants to know who it is (classified, naturally), but her scientist friends just want to know what he’ll become. Something powerful? Perhaps something to set up that Inhumans show for next fall?

Simmons clears the room and talks to the statue to calm it down… as the back of it begins to crumble. She takes off the cocoon piece by piece, uncovers his face, and he thanks her… right before she gets the black bag over her head and dragged away.

Mack’s having a rough day. He’s at the portal when Robbie comes through and knows Robbie is no longer alone. “Want to help settle my last score?” Robbie asks of him.

Post-Credits Stinger

Radcliffe plays the guitar, praising himself saving the day. In the other room, Aida builds a brain with her newfound Darkhold powers. This should be fun!

Badass Moment of the Week

Mack going all flame head on us.

Best One-Liner

“My axe is plenty sharp… and a shotgun,” Mack growls at Director Mace.

Okay, so Mack as Ghost Rider is legit and I want it all the time. I mean, the dark brooding doesn’t fit Mack’s personality, but the badass side of it? Heck yes!

Now, I don’t know all of the machinations of how the spirit of Ghost Rider works, but it feels kind of like the latter seasons of Chuck where they just kind of stick the Intersect in whatever person they want. Can any huge Ghost Rider fans back me up on how he works?

I don’t doubt that he would flee to anybody given the “being dragged to hell” circumstances, but can he willingly jump from person to person like that? I suppose there is more to it, as Robbie does make a new deal with him to bind them together. I’m probably just thinking too far into it.

On a lighter note, did anyone else expect Coulson and May to kiss when he made it through the portal? Because I did, and I’m not even necessarily a shipper of those two. But it felt deserved.

Next Tuesday’s Agents of SHIELD is the winter finale already! How dare they?! I’m thoroughly enjoying this season. Let’s hope Ghost Rider makes it through. Or we get that LMD of Grant Ward to really mess up everyone’s mental states!
