We pick our top 5 moments from the mid-season finale of Gotham, “Beware The Green-Eyed Monster”!

It’s the last episode of Gotham we’ll see for the rest of this year! “Beware The Green-Eyed” monster had a lot of big reveals, twists and things that will play into the remainder of season 3. Check out the 5 moments that really stood out in this episode!

1.”Arkham”

In the infamous words of the Joker at the beginning of Batman: Arkham Asylum, “I set a trap, and you sprang it gloriously!” One thing is for sure, the virus from Alice Tetch’s blood might make you crazy, but it doesn’t make you any less intelligent. It might even make you extremely clever. As Mario Falcone proves in this Gotham mid-season finale. He knows he has the virus, but also finds a way to pass the test and lays out a rather brilliant plan to make Jim look like an insanely jealous and desperate ex. And he sets it all in motion by scrawling one word on James Gordon’s hand: “Arkham”.

Gordon knows somebody has the virus and confronts Tetch at Arkham. Tetch doesn’t want to tell, but is apparently undone by Jim’s mad rhyming skills. He tries everything he can think of short of straight up shooting Mario (oh we’ll get to that) including having him tested several times and pleading with Lee, telling her he still loves her and not to marry Mario.

But Mario knew all of this was going to happen. He played Jim like a cheap fiddle. It just makes Mario look like Leslie’s only way out of the insanity that is Gotham. And it culminates in a really well done scene of Falcone goons beating down Gordon while the wedding is going on.

2. Ed Tests Oswald

Barbara has informed Ed that it was actually his best friend Oswald who killed Isabella. We’re not sure why Barbara is telling Ed this directly rather than say blackmailing Oswald, but we’ll get to that in a bit. She tells him it’s because Oswald is in love with Ed.

Ed doesn’t want to believe it. I’m not sure exactly how he feels about Oswald being in love with him, but any chance of that going anywhere has been permanently ruined by this betrayal. He “tests” Oswald by telling him he wants to be more than friends, and Oswald confesses his feelings to Ed only to have Ed tell him he simply meant business partners.

Now Ed knows the truth, and while he could simply kill Oswald, he wants to destroy his former best friend in the most insidious manner possible. This leads to him coming to Barbara, Butch and Tabitha to form an alliance. Obviously Butch and Tabitha aren’t too keen on this idea seeing what Ed did to them, but ultimately Penguin is the one responsible, so they are sort of willing to let bygones be bygones. And we learn Barbara’s real goal is to be the new queen of the Gotham underworld, which she can only do if Penguin is dethroned.

3. Selina Kisses Bruce

While earlier in the season, Bruce and Selina seemed to finally admit to each other that they want to be more than friends, Bruce has been very gung-ho about them definitely being boyfriend and girlfriend. Selina, not so much. She seems incredibly hesitant to put any labels on the relationship. Most likely because that implies a level of commitment and investment and after being on her own pretty much all of her life, she’s wary about being trusting and vulnerable to someone else in that way.

But finally, in this episode, with them facing possible death yet again, she finally gives in a little by giving Bruce a kiss. It’s not the first time they’ve kissed, or even a passionate kiss, but it’s Selina acknowledging and investing in the relationship, even if it’s just a little. We’ll see how long this relationship lasts though, the Bat and the Cat are usually eventually torn apart because of being on opposite sides, it may only be a matter of time until that happens for Bruce and Selina. After all, if they could just be happy together, why would Bruce  become Batman and/or Selina Catwoman? And in case you haven’t noticed, the city of Gotham tends to be hell on
relationships…

4. We Meet Selina’s Mom

Selina, Bruce and Alfred manage to retrieve the item in the safe. It’s a glass owl figure we don’t really know the siginifcance of yet and won’t until the show returns. More importantly, the Court of Owls’ attack dog Talon shows up. With only Alfred to protect Bruce and Selina, it’s not looking good. On his best day, Aflred usually ends up in the hospital on the losing side of a fight.

And things are going very poorly until a mysterious woman saves them at the last minute by smashing a vase over Talon’s head. Who is the mystery woman? Selina Kyle reveals it’s her mother, Maria Kyle.
This obviously raises a lot of questions. When was the last time Selina saw her mother? Why have they been seperated so long? Is Selina’s mother working for the Court of Owls or against them? And why only show up now? Is she back in her daughter’s life on a long term basis or will she just abandon her again when it suits her needs?

We can be fairly positive that whatever Maria Kyle’s intentions are, they aren’t completely altruistic. And will she drive a wedge between this new relationship between Bruce and Selina that is just now getting somewhere (probably)?

5. Gordon shoots Mario

Mario and Leslie are married and about to spend some time alone at a remote cabin almost nobody knows the location of. What could possibly go wrong? By this time the whole GCPD is on to the fact that Mario has the virus though, and they are desperately trying to track him down before something terrible happens to the new Mrs. Falcone.
Carmine gives up his son’s whereabouts, but only because Gordon promised he would bring Mario in alive. After all, Mario actually is sick, not outright evil. Gordon is racing against the clock to get there though, as Mario’s darker side is taking control. And just as he’s about to brutually stab Leslie in a fit of rage, Gordon shoots Mario, saving Leslie’s life.

But Leslie doesn’t know this. She didn’t see the knife, and the knife itself dropped into the water, possibly never to be found. All she saw was her crazy ex-fiance shoot and kill her new husband. And no one else from the GCPD saw the incident.

While I highly doubt Gordon will be kicked off the GCPD for the billionth time, he will probably be under investigation. Leslie might never be able to shake that moment and trust him even if it’s the truth because that’s just one hell of a tramautic moment. And Carmine Falcone was at least sort of an ally to Jim Gordon. Now he’s made a bitter enemy of the former mob boss, and I doubt Falcone is just going to let it slide (I mean after all, Jim probably just could’ve wounded Mario without killing him). We’ll have to see how this all shakes out in the back half of season 3, but Jim will not be seen as the hero in this situation for a long time if ever.

And that is the 5 moments from the mid-season finale of Gotham that we thought stood out. I think it was a pretty good episode that leaves lots of questions going into the back half of season 3 that will hopefully all be addressed. We’ll find out when the show returns in January on Fox!
