Billy Dee Williams finally gets to play Two-Face over 25 years later in The Lego Batman Movie

The Lego Batman Movie is coming our way in just about 10 weeks. It’s filled with pop culture references and homages to all eras of the Caped Crusader. But it’s not just limited to visual gags, it’s in at least some of the voice casting as well.

One of Batman’s greatest villains is Two-Face, and while not the primary villain of The Lego Batman Movie (that’s the Joker, voiced by Zach Galifianakis), the coin-flipping villain is in the film. And who has the role of voicing him is a great callback to Batman’s cinematic history.

Billy Dee Williams is voicing Two-Face in the movie. This was confirmed by Chris McKay, the director of the film, on Twitter :

Of course Billy Dee Williams is best known as Lando Calrissian from the first trilogy of Star Wars films, but the idea was for his role as the first live-action Harvey Dent to be equally noteworthy. He was brought on board for Tim Burton’s 1989 Batman movie starring Michael Keaton with all the intention of eventually becoming the villainous Two-Face. He actually really wanted the role of Harvey Dent specifically for that reason. But he wasn’t in Batman Returns, Tim Burton was shoved out for the third Batman film which did involve Two-Face, but Joel Schumacher was the new director, and the role of Two-Face went to Tommy Lee Jones. So now Billy Dee Williams finally gets his wish to play Two-Face in at least some capacity. Though we have no idea the extent of his role.

It’s a great meta-reference to have Billy Dee Williams as Two-Face in the Lego Batman film. Hopefully it’s filled with a bunch of equally clever jokes. We’ll find out when the movie comes to theaters on February 10th.
