Suicide Squad wins at the Critics Choice Awards thanks to Margot Robbie’s performance as Harley Quinn

It may be the Christmas season, but it’s also the start of awards season. The Critics Choice Awards aired last night on A&E. DCEU Movies were only nominated in one of the categories at the Critics Choice Awards, that being the category of Best Actress in an Action movie. Gal Godot and Margot Robbie were actually competing against each other as they were both nominated for their roles as Wonder Woman in Batman v Superman and Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad.

In fact, the category was a case of Marvel vs. DC as the other two nominees were Scarlett Johansson for her role as Black Widow in Captain America: Civil War and Tilda Swinton for her role as The Ancient One in Doctor Strange.

While critics may have savaged Suicide Squad as a whole, even most of the negative reviews pointed out Margot Robbie’s performance as Harley Quinn in the film as a highlight, so it shouldn’t be much of a surprise that Robbie won the category. And now Suicide Squad can say it’s an award-winning film, and not for costume design or special effects like most comic book movies are nominated for.

Robbie’s Suicide Squad co-star Viola Davis, who played Amanda Waller in the film also go honored at the Critics Choice Awards. Twice in fact. She won in the category of best supporting actress for her role in Fences. And Davis was presented with the inaugural “See Her” award, which is given to actresses redefining portrayals of women in media for her whole body of work to date.

Could Suicide Squad get any other awards this season? While an Oscar seems unlikely, the Golden Globes often has some, let’s say interesting picks in certain categories so anything is possible…
