Gotham City Sirens will feature Harley Quinn and some of DC’s deadliest villainesses

We have know there is a Harley Quinn movie in development for awhile now, pretty much ever since Margot Robbie got rave reviews for her turn as the former psychiatrist Harleen Qunizel. It even has a screenwriter attached already. And now it’s a couple steps closer to reality has a name: “Gotham City Sirens”, and a director, David Ayer. That’s right, the same David Ayer who wrote and directed this year’s critically thrashed but financial smash hit Suicide Squad.

Ayer will also produce Gotham City Sirens, and it’s a movie that’s meant to showcase the top female villains in the DC Universe. If the movie is based on the Sirens comic book, you can probably expect other characters such as Catwoman and Poison Ivy to be in the movie as well. The co-heads of DC films Geoff Johns & Jon Berg will be on board as producers as well. The movie doesn’t have a target release yet, but now that it has a director on board, it is reportedly on the fast track, so a 2019 release certainly seems likely. Maybe even a 2018 if they cast it fast enough and get production rolling.

It’s certainly interesting that Warner Bros. is choosing David Ayer to direct Gotham City Sirens given the critical reception of Suicide Squad. Even though Suicide Squad was a troubled production, they must’ve still had a pretty good relationship with him to helm such a potentially huge movie. As it’s called “Gotham City Sirens”, I expect a large number of the villains to be based out of Gotham. Catwoman and Poison Ivy are obvious choices, but you could also throw in Babydoll, Livewire (more of a Metropolis Siren, but she’s certainly tangled with Batman), Roxy Rockey, Talia Al Ghul, etc. Would there be any heroes in this movie? Batman would be the obvious answer, but if we want to keep it girl-power centric, a team-up of Batgirl, Supergirl and maybe one female hero such as Black Canary, Zatanna or Katana would be in order. Gotham City Sirens offers a lot of cool possibilities, let’s hope Warner Bros. and David Ayer can deliver on them.
