Suicide Squad 2 Officially In Development

Suicide Squad 2 is definitely happening after the box office smash of the original

It may have not reviewed well, but audiences certainly showed up for this Summer’s DC movie about bad guys trying to do a good thing, Suicide Squad. It was one of the few big breakout hits of a disappointing box office season. So while it was not a guarantee, it seemed likely that a sequel would happen.

And now that is confirmed, as the Hollywood Reporter states that a sequel to Suicide Squad is officially in development. This is really all that is known at this point though. Nobody is attached to this sequel at the moment. David Ayer was recently announced to direct the Harley Quinn-led spinoff Gotham City Sirens, so if Warner Bros. wanted to get the ball rolling on a sequel any time soon, he would likely be off the table for writing and/or directing like he did for the first film.

And who would return for a movie? Presumably Warner Bros. would want Will Smith as Deadshot & Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, but solo movies are in development for both of those actors as those characters, so would they be too busy? Viola Davis would seem a lock a Amanda Waller to return as she is the architect of the Squad.  Could El Diablo return? He appeared to die at the end but given his true form is a powerful fire demon it’s certainly plausible he could be brought back.

Would they be going for a harder, R-rated movie arguably more fitting of the subject matter? And what C/D-list villain would be there only to be killed? I think as long as they aren’t going into an evacuated city with a magic world-ending ring of energy surrounding it, there’s lots of potential for a good Suicide Squad sequel.
