The Reason It’s Great
This amazing eleven-issue crossover was inspired from the short story “Tygers,” which was published in 1986’s Tales of the Green Lantern Corps Annual #2. Geoff Johns and Dave Gibbons took many of Moore’s ideas and added them to the “Sinestro Corps War.” This story arc also introduced the prophecy of the Blackest Night—which also made it to this list of greatest superhero stories.
The crossover sees Sinestro—a former Green Lantern himself—amassing an army of Yellow Lanterns to wage an all-out war on the Green Lantern Corps. The war and its events sees the Guardians trying to remove the foretelling of Blackest Night from their sacred text. Blackest Night will be the result of a War of Light between five corps—each with its own color and emotion. After these corps are destroyed, there will be the “Blackest Night.”
In the end, the Sinestro Corps are defeated with Sinestro also being arrested. However, the Green Lantern Corps’s victory is bittersweet, as they’ve lost 440 members during the war. The next crossover after “Sinestro Corps War” would be, of course, “Blackest Night.”
The huge crossover was both a critical and financial success and went on to win Eisner Awards in 2008 for Best Penciller/Inker and Best Penciller/Inker Team. This is one of the best Green Lantern stories out there, and one can only hope that it’ll one day be adapted to the silver screen.
