Neal Adams discusses Harley Quinn taking on DC’s strongest superhero, Superman, in Harley’s Little Black Book #5

It’s the match-up of the century? Well maybe not, but for some reason, Harley Quinn is facing off against the Man Of Steel in Harley’s Little Black Book #5. This is a follow-up/homage to the famous Muhammed Ali vs. Superman comic from 1978, where Muhammed Ali and Superman fought to determine who was earth’s true champion. The winner would face the champion of an intergalactic race called the Scrubb. Now the Scrubb have returned, and this time they pick Harley Quinn as their champion to take on Superman.

Neal Adams worked on the original Muhammed Ali vs. Superman comic back in 1978. He is also teaming with Amanda Connor  & Jimmy Palmiotti on Harley’s Black Book #5. Adams talked with Newsarama about how the difference between Muhammed Ali vs. Superman and Harley Quinn vs. Superman is that even though the original story was a pretty silly concept, it was treated completely seriously, whereas this modern update is full of humor because you know it’s an absurd situation:

"Basically, it was adding humor to a story that everybody sort of took seriously, but you know, nobody really took it seriously. When the idea was first presented, everybody hated it. They said it was a stupid idea. “Are you out of your mind?” Half the country didn’t like Ali and half the country did like Ali. As far as I’m concerned, the first half of the country can go to blazes, because Ali was a real hero. The Superman vs. Muhammad Ali book was printed in every free country in the world. OK? Now, it’s so good in its way that we can go in and make fun of it and feel good about it. There’s no downside to this or to what we’re doing right now, because it’s all fun and it’s all comics, and we’re all having a great time."
