The post-winter hiatus premiere episode of The Flash sees Barry on a mission to stop the future death of Iris.

The Present” was the last episode to air before The Flash went on its winter hiatus. Barry traveled to the future (yes, again) and saw Savitar kill Iris right in front of him—setting up the rest of the season’s storyline.

More from TV

Returning from the events of “Invasion,” Barry learned more about Savitar—the first metahuman to have super-speed. Barry travels to Earth-3 to get some assistance from Jay Garrick, who’s heard of Savitar.

The first fight between Savitar against Jay and Barry doesn’t go so well, as the God of Motion pummels both of them. He’s only stopped after Barry contains the stone in a box. In that same fight, Julian is revealed to be Doctor Alchemy.

Julian, back at STAR Labs, awakens to find himself restrained. Savitar soon uses Cisco’s loss of his brother as a means to escape. Wally comes in at the nick of time to save Barry, but he also reveals that he’s been secretly training to become a hero.

Cisco quickly creates a device that allows Julian to be used a conduit for Savitar. The team learns that Savitar comes from the future. In this future, Barry did something that angered him. The team forms a plan to throw the stone into the Speed Force by using the combined speed of both Barry and Jay.

When they execute the plan, Barry is briefly pulled into the future where he witnesses himself watching Savitar kill Iris. This week, The Flash returns, and Barry is back in action—trying every which way to stop Iris’s death from happening.

“Borrowing Problems from the Future”

"BARRY FIGHTS FOR IRIS — Barry (Grant Gustin) is tormented by his vision of the future where Iris (Candice Patton) is murdered by Savitar. When a criminal named Plunder (guest star Stephen Huszar) shows up in Central City, Barry recalls the villain’s presence in his vision of the future and fears that if he catches Plunder, it will cement Iris’ fate. Confused about Barry’s hesitation to stop Plunder, Wally (Keiynan Lonsdale) decides to step in as Kid Flash. Caitlin (Danielle Panabaker) offers Julian (Tom Felton) a job."
