Agents Of SHIELD Season 4, Episode 14 Synopsis: “The Man Behind The Shield”

This week on Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD, the team mounts a rescue to save Director Mace.

I think we can all agree that Jeffrey Mace has been a very polarizing character—from week to week. When he was initially introduced in Agents of SHIELD, we liked him. The man was affable and well-mannered. Then, we got the hint that he was playing some sort of political game. It was definitely par for the course for a director position, but something was off.

We soon learned that he was placed inside of SHIELD by General Talbot—another guy we sort of change sides on depending on the episode. Yes, the audience was saying in unison, “I knew it!” But then we teetered back to liking Mace when he revealed that it was all accidental. And he agreed to it because he, even as a human, believed that Inhumans should have equal rights.

Phil Coulson saw Mace’s talent as the face of SHIELD and struck a deal with him: Phil would lead operations, while Mace would handle all the boring stuff—including getting any nosy politicians off their tail.

In “BOOM,” Mace proved to everyone that he was worthy of being part of SHIELD—especially Coulson’s team. Knowing that his super-strength serum would likely kill him, Mace took an injection and bought the team enough time to capture new explosive Inhuman Terrence Shockley.

As Mace held off as many Watchdogs as he could, the serum wore off and he was quickly captured. This week, our agents go on a daring mission to save one of their own. However, the mission may prove to be costly as it’s a trap set to capture one of SHIELD’s greatest—Phil Coulson.
