The Flash Season 3, Episode 14 Recap: “Attack On Central City”

After The Flash defeated Grodd on his home turf of Gorilla City, the villain has made his way back to Central City looking for revenge.

It’s a joyous occasion on The Flash as HR Wells has declared today, Friend’s Day! He’s taken it upon himself to decorate the speed lab for the special event, which looks a lot like Valentine’s Day to me. Wally West and Jesse Quick decide this is the best time to drop the bombshell on her father, Harrison Wells, that she’s decided to stay on Earth-1. Surprisingly, Wells seems to be okay with the news.

Cisco Ramon isn’t in a celebratory mood after seeing all the lovey-dovey couples together. Where’s his love donut? This causes him to reminisce about Gypsy when she suddenly teleports into the lab and attacks. Wells is able to get the drop on her from behind with a huge ray gun.

Gypsy wakes up inside one of the S.T.A.R. Labs cells for metahumans. She doesn’t remember what caused her to attack everyone. The last thing she remembers is heading to Earth-2 in search of a breacher and getting lost in a jungle, which turns out to be Gorilla City. Grodd used her to travel to Central City with an army at his disposal.

Wally wants to thank Wells for being so cool about Jesse staying behind. Wells says he’s fine with it because he doesn’t have much longer to live and wants Jesse to be happy. Jesse doesn’t know, and Wells wants to keep it that way. He does make himself useful by making a device that will allow Cisco to use his Vibe powers to find Grodd. While this is going on, Grodd takes over Joe West’s brain and makes him shoot himself in the head with his police gun. Luckily, Barry Allen is fast enough to deflect the gun so the bullet only grazes Joe’s forehead.

Since Grodd was in Joe’s head, the gorilla may have left some residual memories behind. #TeamFlash hooks magnets to Joe’s head to retrace Grodd’s steps. Barry is starting to get some dark thoughts about killing Grodd so he can never terrorize his friends again. Iris and the others try to convince Barry that this isn’t the route to go down.

Wally can’t keep Wells’ secret any longer. He confides in Jesse about Wells’ health, which she immediately calls out for being a lie. Wells isn’t dying; he just wanted to make up an excuse for Jesse to feel guilty and come back to Earth-2.

While Joe’s memories are being processed, he begins drawing an image of a general on a sheet of paper. We saw this same man earlier in the episode prepping military weapons for a fight against Grodd’s army. It looks like Grodd has taken over his body and plans to use those weapons against Central City. The Flash races to the location of a rocket launcher and defuses it before it goes off.

The Flash won’t kill Grodd, but he does need Cisco’s help. This takes him to Earth-19, the home of Gypsy. He knows that behind her tough exterior is a heart of gold. Cisco asks Gypsy to help them stop Grodd once and for all.

It’s Speedsters vs. Gorillas on the streets of Central City. The Central City Police Department is standing with The Flash, Kid Flash, and Jesse Quick awaiting Grodd’s troops. Before the battle gets too intense Gypsy appears with Solovar, who challenges Grodd for leadership. The two fight up and down the streets and buildings, with Solovar coming out the victor. The white gorilla is about to kill Grodd when The Flash begs for mercy. He wants Grodd left behind on Earth-1.

We wrap up with Grodd sent away to Argus. Gypsy steals a kiss from Cisco while reminding him that he can’t handle her. “I’m going to marry that woman” are the only words Cisco can mutter. Instead of focusing on the future, Barry concentrates on the present by proposing to Iris. Wally and Jesse are having a date night, but Wally runs out to pick something up from the store. On his way, he sees Savitar charge towards him.

Highlight

I’m glad that Wally West and Jesse Quick are able to begin to explore their relationship. The Flash has never lacked in the love department, so adding their blossoming romance will bear monitoring. Plus, we got to see Solovar and Grodd rampage across Central City in a pretty epic throwdown.

Closing Thought

Barry finally popped the question to Iris. Were the two engaged when Barry traveled to the future and witnessed Savitar kill Iris? Is he changing the future again, or are things still leading to this tragic event?
