We’ve come a long way since the days of the unitard. Yes, I know that Black Vulcan is a completely different character that was solely created for the cheesy Super Friends series of cartoons that ran from the 1970s to the 1980s. However, Black Vulcan was only needed because DC was, at the time, in a dispute with Tony Isabella—Black Lightning’s creator.
All of that is history now. We’re finally getting a series with the actual character—and a respectable suit. Today, The CW gave us a first look at actor Cress Williams wearing the famous garb.
It has all the modern cues: some leather for a bit of polish, various bits of technological armor on top of a cloth weave, and a hint at the actual insignia without it looking too on-the-nose. Not bad. It’ll certainly look great on-screen.

Black Lightning is currently in development from Mara Brock Akil, Salim, and Greg Berlanti—who is responsible for The CW’s current DC TV universe that’s comprised of Arrow, The Flash, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, and Supergirl.
The series was originally slated for Fox with a pilot production commitment. However, the network later passed on the series due to too many existing dramas in that genre. The CW would later pick up the series with a pilot order.
Berlanti and company currently have no plans to have the character or the series be part of the existing television universe. Well, that’s what they said about Supergirl. With that in mind, only time will tell.
As of this report, the first air date is unknown.
